Contemporary Telegraph Tape Announcing His Death in the Sinking of HMS Hampshire, with HMS Hampshire Silver and Tortoiseshell Presentation Box. 1915-1916. Two interesting First World War survivals comprising a contemporary telegraph receiver tape reporting…the sinking of HMS Hampshire and the death of Lord Kitchener, together with a silver and tortoiseshell HMS Hampshire presentation box dated 1915. The paper tape measures approximately 2400 mm when extended. Lacking the opening few letters, with several old repairs and creasing from having been rolled, but substantially complete and legible considering its fragile format. Good condition. The transmitted report reads, with minor losses and imperfections: "[His M]ajesty's ship Hampshire with Lord Kitchener and his staff on board was sunk last night about 8 o'clock to the west of the Orkney Islands either by a mine or torpedo. Four boats were seen by observers on shore to leave the ship. The weather was [.] and heavy seas were running. Vessels and destroyers at once proceeded to the spot and a party was sent along the coast to search but only some bodies and a capsized boat have been found [.]. As the whole shore has been searched there is no hope of there being any survivors. No [.] had yet been received from the search party on shore. HMS Hampshire was on her way to Russia." Accompanying the tape is a circular silver-mounted tortoiseshell presentation box, approximately 80 mm in diameter and 30 mm deep, raised on four feet, with hinged lid and cushioned interior. The lid is applied with a crowned Hampshire rose above a ribbon inscribed "H.M.S. HAMPSHIRE" and the date "1915". Hallmarked silver and bearing the retailer's mark of The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd. The firm, established in 1880 by William Gibson and John Lawrence Langman, was one of London's leading jewellers and silversmiths and was particularly associated with high-quality presentation silver and specially commissioned pieces. The naval insignia and 1915 date indicate that the box was produced as an HMS Hampshire presentation or commemorative piece during the ship's service and, significantly, before her loss the following year. HMS Hampshire was lost off Orkney on 5 June 1916 while carrying Field Marshal Lord Kitchener and his staff on a diplomatic mission to Russia. Kitchener, Secretary of State for War and one of the most recognisable British figures of the First World War, was among the members of his party lost with the ship. The tape is particularly striking for the immediacy of its report: the cause is still given as "either by a mine or torpedo", rescue operations remain underway, and the message records the rapidly disappearing hope of finding survivors. An uncommon pairing of two contemporary HMS Hampshire survivals.

Autograph letter signed to William Staveley Gordon concerning the Dongola Expedition and the Nile gunboats. Dongola, 24 September 1896. Single sheet folded to form four pages, written on all four sides and signed. Old horizontal and vertical mailin…g folds, otherwise very good, with bold dark ink throughout. Written from Dongola immediately following the successful conclusion of the Dongola Expedition, this important campaign letter sees Kitchener personally credit William Staveley Gordon with the success of one of the defining British military operations in the Sudan. Addressing Gordon, a Royal Engineers officer and nephew of General Charles Gordon of Khartoum, Kitchener writes: "A great measure of the success of this expedition has been due to you and I wish to let you know how highly I appreciate the work you have done." The letter was written on 24 September 1896, one day after the occupation of Dongola and only days after the Battle of Hafir, where Anglo-Egyptian gunboats forced the Mahdist river defences and secured the final advance south. Kitchener discusses the performance of the newly constructed gunboat Zafir, noting that she reached the force "only 2 hours before the final advance", before providing a detailed assessment of her capabilities. Although critical of her speed against the current, coal consumption and draught, he concludes that "the design and arrangement of the steamer is very nearly perfect" and that, had she arrived on schedule, "she would be a splendid boat." He leaves Gordon to deal with the remaining practical difficulties before adding the telling observation that "The troops are pretty ragged & boots worn out, as you may imagine." Kitchener's acknowledgement that "a great measure of the success of this expedition" was due to Gordon represents an exceptionally generous private tribute and demonstrates the importance of Gordon's work in enabling the advance upon Dongola. William Staveley Gordon (1859-1934) served with the Royal Engineers in Egypt and the Sudan and became one of Kitchener's principal officers responsible for the Nile flotilla. As the nephew of General Charles Gordon, killed at Khartoum in 1885, his role in the reconquest carried an additional symbolic significance, the campaign being widely viewed in Britain as the recovery of the Sudan following the Mahdist victories of the previous decade. A group of 5 autograph letters signed, various dates (from 1 August 1914 to 3 June 1916), written in ink on naval stationery (most with crowned "HMS Hampshire" device), together with an official Post Office telegram announcing the loss of the vessel and two portrait photographs of Grey in uniform by J Russell and Sons; the whole housed loose, the telegram glazed and framed; usual folds, light handling wear, overall well preserved, a very good grouping. The loss of H.M.S. Hampshire on 5 June 1916 was one of the most widely reported maritime disasters of the First World War, in which Herbert Kitchener was among those killed. The group centres on Lieutenant E. V. Grey, Royal Navy, and comprises letters written to his sister ("Cis") during his service, including material from the outbreak of war through to the immediate aftermath of the Battle of Jutland. The final letter, dated 3 June 1916, is of particular significance. Written immediately following the Battle of Jutland (31 May-1 June 1916), it records a brief but direct contemporary reaction: "we came out of it jolly well… the ancient cruisers were rather strafed as you will see in the papers", before closing with the remark that he is "absolutely dog tired". This letter was written just two days after the battle and two days before his death. The official Admiralty telegram, sent to his sister, reported that H.M.S. Hampshire had been sunk with all on board. The vessel was lost off Orkney on 5 June 1916, shortly after departing on a mission carrying Lord Kitchener to Russia. There is a note written recently from a family member of Lieutenant Grey and his sister. It reads "letters from Great Granny's brother to her from HMS Hampshire, he served with Lord Kitchener on it and enclosed is the telegram to say all had been sunk including Lord Kitchener and Granny's brother." A rare grouping relating Lieutenant Grey who was at the Battle of Jutland and sadly the subsequent sinking of H.M.S. Hampshire, with the uncommon official telegram confirming his loss. Marchand had led a small force overland to claim the area for France to undermine British control in Egypt and the Sudan, whilst Kitchener was in the process of defeating the Mahdi.

Field Marshal Haratio Herbert Kitchener [1850 - 1916] was a senior British army officer noted for his part in the Boer War and the Sudan campaigns where he is credited for winning the Battle of Omdurman for which he was made Lord Kitchener o…f Khartoum. He became Secretary of State for War in 1914 and as one of the few to foresee a long war, he organised the largest voluntary army that Britain had ever seen featuring prominently on the famous "Your Country Needs You" recruitment posters. On his way to attend negotiations in Russia with Tsar Nicholas II, his ship, the armoured cruiser HMS Hampshire, struck a German mine off the west coast of Orkney and sank with the loss of 737 lives including Kitchener and his entire entourage. Only 17 men survived.

Highly competent album of drawings of fortifications, mines, and elevations by the young Kitchener…while a student at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. Kitchener (1850-1916), born in Ireland to English parents and raised in Switzerland, spent "an undistinguished two years" at the Royal Military Academy. When he progressed to the School of Military Engineering, Chatham, he began to distinguish himself. He worked with the Palestine Exploration Fund and on the survey of Cyprus, and gained a reputation as a man who knew the Near East. "In 1884 he acted as an intelligence officer for the relief expedition sent to the Sudan to rescue Charles George Gordon; he continually pressed Wolseley, the commander of the expedition, to push forward more rapidly. Despite the expedition's failure to save Gordon, Kitchener emerged with credit and some fame." He was named sirdar or commander of the Egyptian army in 1892, and instituted needed reforms. Under his leadership, Anglo-Egyptian forces defeated the Mahdist armies in the Sudan in 1898, avenging Gordon's death and reconquering the country. Kitchener's administrative talents came to the fore in the South African War, where superior transportation and the policy of destroying farms and interning Boer civilians in concentration camps prevailed against the guerrilla tactics of the Boer forces. In his role as secretary of state for war in 1914, his advocacy of preparations for a long and global conflict defined British policy. A choice item from early in the career of this larger than life and still controversial figure. Leather and cloth over boards, upper cover stamped in gilt. Upper corners perished. Internally clean and fresh 10 ink and watercolor drawings of elevations and plans of fortifications, signed in a lettering hand; with 9 lithographs of classical fortifications &c.
