Governador civil de Coimbra em 1842-1843, passará, no entanto, para as fileiras da oposição ao cabralismo, em 1846, no mesmo ano em que entra em rota de colisão com o governo do duque de Palmela e passa a seguir o duque de Saldanha, vindo a ser seu ministro dos Negócios da Fazenda entre 29 de Janeiro e 18 de Junho de 1849. Pertenceu, ainda, ao Conselho de Sua Majestade e foi eleito deputado em várias legislaturas.
