This is difficult for odours as there is no single parameter which can easily describe odour nuisance, and a range of measurements may be required. It is not sufficient to simply measure concentrations, as it is the rate of emission that is of paramount importance if odour sources are to be suitably assessed and controlled. Odour measurement is further complicated in that many measurements cannot be performed on site, meaning that samples must be preserved for laboratory analysis. This report is a review of techniques currently available for odour source sampling, sample collection and preservation, and odour measurement. It has arisen from a need to consolidate earlier studies across various sectors, in particular the agricultural and wastewater treatment industries. The report highlights best practice where it exists, and indicates research areas where knowledge is lacking. This need for this report was identified by the Odour Network, an EPSRC-sponsored discussion platform intended to promote multidisciplinary research in the areas of odour measurement, modelling and treatment.
