This nephew of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was an architect and often worked together with another H.W. Longfellow nephew and architect (Alexander W., Jr., founder of the Boston architecture firm Longfellow, Alden & Harlow) on such projects as buildings as Harvard and Radcliffe; his work on M.I.T. designs isamong his best known work. ALS, 2pp (single leaf), 5" X 8", Portland, ME, n.y. Addressed to Mr. Carlson. Near fine. Writing to this officer of the Boston Society for Architecture, Longfellow thanks him for a lecture request but declines: "Unfortunately I have had for some time a trouble with my throat which makes it impossible for me to speak to any company, and has obliged me the last two times that I undertook such a thing to find some one to speak for me." Boldly penned and signed in black ink.

Unbound. Zustand: Near Fine. Portfolio. Twenty engraved plates and one contents card laid into a four-fold chemise of leather over watered silk. The engraved cards are nicely printed on either white or pale pink cards measuring 5" x 7" with rounded corners and gilt edges. The engraved cards are bright and about fine with the author's name penciled neatly in a tiny hand on the unprinted verso (and one with a small penciled note on the front); contents card a trifle foxed with one tiny edge nick. Housed in the worn remains of the four-fold chemise that is lacking several panels, including the front cover. We located a couple of examples in the trade of the same engravings but bound accordion-style into cloth. In that case, the publisher's information was printed at the bottom of the contents card; we are unsure why it was removed for this iteration.
