Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Oblong small quarto measuring 11" x 7". Brown cloth over paper boards with "photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. Contains 83 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2.5" x 5" and 4.5" x 6.5" with captions. Very good photo album with tape repairs on the front board, tears, and slight bowing with near fine photographs. A photo album beginning around 1893 compiled by Mrs. Albert S. Long (Katherine Long) of Lawrence, Massachusetts with her card laid in. Her husband was a contractor and carpenter in the area and a member of the Shriners. The album begins with 18 cyanotypes of the family home, exterior and interior, dinner parties, their horse and carriage, and a group lounging on the porch. These also include cyanotypes of both Christmas 1893 and Christmas 1894 with images of their Christmas trees and the gifts placed underneath and on the trees. The Long's vacationed on Peake Island, Maine in 1895 with photos of Casco Bay, their vacation cottage, and sailing. One photo from this trip is trick image captioned "I want to shake hands with myself" and shows a photo of a man photo edited to look like he was facing himself. The album shows photos of Albert's work and the Long's favorite places and friends around New England. One of these photos is of a large house with a fence which is captioned, "the first school house Albert built." Other photos include Merrimack Falls and Lake, a friend's dinner party, and Tarbox School. The Long's were very interested in the warships that would dock in the area and photographed them. One of these photo shows the U.S.S. Raleigh in Casco Bay which was used during the Spanish American War and later World War I. Other warships include the Montgomery, the New York, and the Minneapolis. A photo captioned, "on board the warship" shows personnel and passengers milling about on the upper deck. Later photos from 1906 show the Longs with their new automobile posing around a dirt road. The final section of 40 photographs is from a Shriner's party the Long's were a part of during 1907. The group traveled around the United States and to Mexico and the West on a train visiting a variety of places and landmarks. They visited the Whirlpool rapids in Canada near Niagara Falls and the Niagara Falls bridge. The party is seen here in fancy dress and in elaborate hats posed in the rocks by the rapids. There is also an image taken of the Shriners on board the train. As they traveled West they photographed the homes of Mexicans in El Paso and horseback riding. The trip also took them to Arizona where they visited the Grand Canyon and Hopi Indian pueblos. One of these photos shows a small "Indian" boy with the canyon in the background. They continued on to California and took photos of the Pacific Ocean, palm trees, and a clam bake they attended. Katherine photographed Texas and Mexico and included a Bull Ring, a Mexican market, and a mission with men in large Mexican hats in the foreground. A remarkably attractive and interesting collection of both domestic and travel snapshot photography, many of the images are a bit larger than usual size, most likely taken by a well-to-do New England young woman.
