Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. Stephen Long (Author photograph) and Don Landwehrl (illustrator). ciii, 276, [2] pages. Inscribed by the author on the fep. The inscription reads To Nit-- All the Best! Julius Lester. The author recounts his political and spiritual odyssey during the past ten years, discussing anti-Semitism, James Baldwin's work and legacy, video games, pollution in space, suicide, the Holocaust, and more. Julius Bernard Lester (January 27, 1939 - January 18, 2018) was an American writer and an academic who taught for 32 years (1971-2003) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Lester was also a civil rights activist, a photographer, and a musician who recorded two albums of folk music and original songs. In 1960 he received his BA from Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, with a major in English and minors in Art and Spanish. In 1961 he moved to New York City where he was a folk singer and a photographer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. His experiences during "Freedom Summer" were documented in a 2014 documentary The Folk Singer, which aired as part of the American Experience series on PBS. Lester's 1966 essay "The Angry Children of Malcolm X," is considered one of the definitive African-American statements of its era. Lester wrote eight nonfiction books, 31 children's books, one book of poetry and photographs (with David Gahr), and three adult novels. His first book was an instructional guide to playing the 12-string guitar, co-authored with Pete Seeger. He published more than 200 essays and book and film reviews for such publications as The New York Times Book Review, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, and Village Voice. Derived from a Publishers Weekly article: Forthrightness and independence characterize these essays, previously published in the New York Times , Boston Globe , New Republic , etc. Nine are on writers and writing, five on race and 21 on subjects ranging from safe sex, teenage suicides, video games and Bernhard Goetz to pollution in space, writing as reaching out to people and the significance of Rosh Hashanah. An early advocate of black pride, Lester disassociated himself from the movement when he determined that the ``black collective cared only for itself, and its ultimate triumph would be to destroy that singular and unique entity I knew as myself.'' Since then, as teacher and writer, he has preached love for those who oppose us as well as for family and friends. His sensitivity is apparent in his evaluations of Aldous Huxley and Thomas Merton; his aversion to anti-Semitism evident in his assessments of James Baldwin, Louis Farrakhan and Jesse Jackson. Above all, he is concerned with the meaning of life: ``What is it like to be me?''. First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated] [First THUS--Contains materials reprinted from periodicals, etc.].

Zustand: Sehr gut. Zustand: Sehr gut | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | This small book is a seven-week, forty-day devotional that uses excerpts from the book, Jesus Still Speaks: the Seven Last Words of Jesus from the Cross, by Larry Long. Each day of each week follows an outline of prayers, Bible readings, meditations, original poems, excerpts from the Westminster Shorter Catechism, recommended worship songs from the Web, and topics for journaling that are designed to lead the reader into a deeper understanding of how Jesus's last words spoken from the cross still speak with relevance. The devotional was written for use during the season of Lent, but it can be used at any time for a 40-day journey into a deeper understanding of self, sin, spiritual awakening, and renewal.
