Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) was born in Providence, Rhode Island, published almost exclusively in pulp magazines, never achieved commercial success during his lifetime, and died at forty-six in poverty. The front panel is missing entirely. The back cover is frayed one quarter inch on all edges except the flap with multiple tears and chips as a result. Fortunately the text on flaps is complete and the wonderful woodcut on back cover is in fine state (by Lee Brown Coye whose illustrations appear throughout the book in fine condition). As for the book, as is common with this title, the spine is lightly sunned and a single chip on the paper title label. Binding has loosened from usage (opens readily to pastedowns) and small separation gap exists at head. Dampstain at tail, a few spots on front, none affecting interior. Text is evenly and mildly age toned, crisp and compelling.
