Monty Shaw's 'Banks and Miles: Thirty Years of Design Evolution' was supposedly published by Lund Humphries (London) in February 1993 but no copy can be found on the internet (one listed on WorldCat appears to be a ghost). This collection, in a buff card folder, contains material relating to Shaw's monograph, grouped as follows: ONE. Letters to Shaw from Colin Banks: Three Autograph Letters Signed (one 4to, 2 pp; two on compliments slips, 12mo, 1 p), two Typed Letters Signed (both 4to, 1 p), and three Autograph Note Signed (one 12mo, 1 p, also on a compliments slip; two on press releases). Also copy of Typed Letter Signed (folio, 1 p; 16 February 1989) from Banks to John Taylor of Lund Humphries: 'We do wish to move ahead now: our correspondence does add up to a reasonable agreement, [.] We had a long meeting with Monty Shaw (the author) on my return from Bangladesh, and have formally commissioned him to start the work although he has had some material from us from before Christmas.' The copy of the letter to Taylor encloses a copy (folio, 1 p) of 'Banks & Miles book - draft blurb' by 'Colin Banks & Monty Shaw | 16 February 89', and of a 'List of possible commentators in Banks & Miles Book 16 February 1989' (folio, 2 pp). The Banks correspondence includes a Typed Letter Signed, 9 July 1990, responding to the news of Shaw's ill health: 'I was quite shaken by your news. [.] The P[ost]. C[ard]. was a bit like the leaf carried by the pigeon - there is dry land ahead.' He goes on to say that John Taylor at the publishers Lund Humphries has 'known for over two weeks now and I have not had a response'. States that after 'Roly Atterbury's Seventieth birthday' he 'went on to peer through the windows of George Buday's summer house in the grounds of a mental hospital at Chislehurst'. Reminisces about a previous visit: 'the strangest sight you ever saw prints, letters, books, old biscuits and wood blocks shoulder high, with just the brass cap of a foolscap Albion poling out of the middle. A narrow corridor half way around this tip where it had been stopped up by an ancient subsidence. Buday sitting on the chair trying to hasten the end by chain smoking - I rather expected to read that it had all gone up in flames.' One Autograph Letter Signed, 26 December 1990, responds to an Autograph Letter Signed from Shaw to C & M on 17 December 1990 (a copy of which - folio, 2 pp - is present here in THREE below) describing his ill health (diabetes followed by heart attack). Shaw comments that 'We have always been a wholemeal bread, white-fish-rather-than-red-meat set-up; non-smoking & moderate drinking - so it all seems a bit unfair.' Banks responds: 'Life is a bugger isn't it - but the alternative is worse - [.] As far as the book is concerned of course we would love to have it underway. However we have no dates in mind although John Taylor may dissent. As it is we have overflowing plates with far more than we can chew [.] We have opened small studio's [sic] in Hamburg and Brussels - they have taken up a lot of time and even more money and will continue to do both for the next few months whilst we consider to close down or retrench in London.' TWO: Typed Note Signed to Shaw from John Miles, and ('pp. John Miles') a typed 'list of interviews', falling into the categories: 'Clients with whom we have worked closely and produced good work', 'Designers/managers who we have worked with and have become friends', 'Other designers whose respect we think we might have' and 'GOM of Design'. THREE: Copies of two Autograph Letters Signed and two Typed Letters Signed (totalling 5 pp, folio) from Shaw to B & M. On 4 February 1989 Shaw suggests the 'simpler and straight-forwarder [the title] the better', his suggestion (the one adopted) being 'Penny plain'. Letter of 17 December 1990 (quoted in ONE above), beginning 'No, I haven't died, but it's the highest of high times that you heard from me.' FOUR: Press release with autograph note from Colin Banks, 24 January.…

Original colour-printed plan of the London Underground (overall size: 60.5 x 44.5 cm) with multiple folds reducing to a single pamphlet as issued. The map has a coloured background with the underground lines imposed over a street plan of central London and adjacent suburbs. Underground stations are denoted by circles and interchange stations are denoted by a diamond. Public parks are highlighted in green, and in the lower right corner there is a table showing the colour-coded key to the underground lines, along with a dotted-line for lines (Central, Bakerloo, Northern) listed for further construction in the future. The map runs from Uxbridge in the west, to Cockfosters and High Barnett in the north, to Morden in the south, and Barking in the east. On the reverse is a small plan showing centrally located cinemas and theatres, plus a larger plan showing central London overlaid with underground lines and symbols depicting art galleries, public buildings of note, cathedrals and churches. Complete with an explanation table. Lists accompany the plan for easy reference, including 'Future Extensions' to the Underground. In very good condition.…

Both items in fair condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. ONE: 8 December 1929. 4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. He begins by stating that he has read Walters' 'Charm of Lancashire' with great enjoyment, and considers it one 'of which every Lancashire family and lover of the county should possess a copy'. He continues: 'I myself was born between Pendle and Boulsworth. My Father's stock farmed around Trawden and the Boulsworth side, and my mother's around Blacko and the Pendle slopes, so your section devoted to this locality has an especial attraction for me. Many an afternoon as a boy have I waded i'thwatter-gait at Barrowford, and higher up at Roughlee.' As an 'animadversion' on Walters' book, he corrects his use of a dialect phrase: 'Out o't'gait! Is a colloquialism frequently heard in that locality, "gait" signifying "way"; watter-gait water-way: but water-gate is like saying water-door, or barrier, or obstacle, whereas the other signification is intended.' He points out a 'printers error', and then states that he has 'written to several of my friends up north and recommended them to secure for themselves a copy of "The Charm of Lancashire"'. He ends with news of an exhibition he will be having at Eastertime, at which 'there will be one or two pictures in which Pendle looms in the background'. Pencil note at foot of letter: 'This is Orlando Greenwood a Painter in Oils'. TWO: 31 October 1930. 1p., 12mo. He thanks him for 'the notice of the publication of "Romantic Cheshire", informs him that he has ordered the book, and wishes him 'all the success that you had with your book on Lancashire'. According to one authority: 'Orlando Greenwood was born in Nelson, Lancashire. He studied at Goldsmiths' College of Art, his studies interrupted by the First World War, when he was conscripted into the Royal Engineers. | His first major exhibition was held at Spinks, London in 1925, which was reported as "a triumph" by the Daily Mail. | Greenwood became a full member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1922, and exhibited at the Royal Academy 1920-1933, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, as well as widely across London at Colnaghi, Beaux Arts Gallery, The Groupil Salon Gallery, and the Leicester and Grosvenor Galleries. A centenary exhibition was held at The Bloomsbury Workshop in 1992. | Greenwood completed iconic poster designs for the London Underground and the Great Western Railway, and designs for London shops such as Liberty and Whiteleys. | His works can be found in numerous public collections in the UK including Manchester City Galleries, Towneley Hall Art Gallery & Museum, Harris Museum & Art Gallery and Grundy Art Gallery.'. …

No Binding. Zustand: Very Good. Folding map. 370mm x 452mm opened out. Framed and glazed on both sides. The map, a 1925 edition of Betts' central area of the London underground, is coloured and scaled at 1inch to the mile. A few small holes in the intersections of the map folds do not detract from an attractive map. Printed on the verso is information for travellers including a map of the theatres in Central London, a map showing underground railway connection with the main line termini, a list of restaurants wth nearest underground stations, and shopping thoroughfares etc. The 1924 edition of the map did not have the map showing the main line terminal connections. This 1925 map shows the Charing Cross, Euston and Hampstead Railway extension from Charing Cross to Kennington New Street under construction, the line being opened in September 1926. Leboff and Demuth: " No Need to Ask ", Harrow Weald 1999, p. 66 - 69. The 2 "spots" on the map are reflections from the camera lens.…

Original colour-printed map (25 x 34.25 cm) of the London Underground. Trimmed to the neatline, one small tear along centre fold repair with archival tape, generally in very good clean condition. This Underground map shows the Railway lines belonging to the Underground Group as well as the Central London Railway and Metropolitan Railway lines. Each line is represented by a different colour, other railways are not included, but London United tramways are shown by lines of red crosses and other tramways routes are marked with a blue broken line. The colourful lines are superimposed onto a detailed plan of London printed in grey. Notably, the Shepherd's Bush Exhibition and Earls Court Exhibition are both shaded in red.…

Original pocket-size colour-printed folding map of the London Underground (28 x 34.5 cm) issued to passengers at the end of World War I. Map is printed entirely in grey, some background detail is provided, a small palette of only five colours are used to depict the train lines. Box reference table with 'UndergrounD' logo in top right corner. The verso features a theatre plan and key, general information (seasonal and workman's tickets, lost property, through tickets, train services), London markets, churches, reference libraries, places of interest, and connections with main line termini. Good condition, some light discolouration to folds, a very good example overall. This is the first Underground map issued to passengers after the end of the First World War in 1918. Some restrictions on colour printing must still have been in place as a limited palette of five colours (red, brown, black, turquoise, and blue) is used to show nine different lines. The use of turquoise to show the rival Metropolitan Railway and District Railway is a particularly amusing choice, though this may also have been an effort to minimise competition from the Metropolitan Railway. Some background detail is provided on the map, but it is printed entirely in grey. Unlike the 1916 wartime edition of the map, not even the river or the parks are coloured. The 'UndergrounD' logo appears on the front of the map in its usual place in the upper-right corner, but the back of the map is where this map's most important feature resides. When folded, this map's cover features the first use of the now-familiar Johnston roundel with the red circle and black bar. Red circles had been in use on station name signs since 1908 and the first use of the red circle with the UndergrounD logo over the top appeared in a 1912 poster by Charles Sharland celebrating the solar eclipse of that year. Hoping to establish a more consistent brand identity, Frank Pick (London Underground's Publicity Officer) had asked Edward Johnston to standardise the red circle and black bar design in 1917. With Pick's support, Johnston's standardised roundel quickly became an essential feature on Underground maps from 1919 onwards and is now an iconic part of London's identity.…

Original colour-printed map showing the London Underground network (28 x 34.5 cm); verso printed with London Underground logo and additional text. This is the first Underground map issued to passengers after the end of the First World War in 1918. Colour-printed card (204 x 144mm) folded in thirds. A little rubbed to folds, just a touch dustsoiled. Old phone number in pencil to margin at rear. The third folding pocket-version of Harry Beck?s revolutionary tube map, based on electrical diagrams. The first issue of his new design was in January 1933, and minor tweaks were made for subsequent printings. In this one, with print code ?33-2791?, the interchange stations are marked by the familiar circles, instead of the diamonds of the initial design, and the escalator connection between Bank and Monument stations is noted for the first time.…

First edition, first state, of Harry Beck's map of the London Underground, tipped in as issued. Copies of the pamphlet were also issued standalone in January 1933. The Short Guide to London was first published in 1924, but this, the third edition, was the first to include Beck's groundbreaking map of the London Underground published by Waterlow and Sons. This map had reconceptualized the network for millions of people: "Rather than emphasising distance and geographical accuracy, like other maps, Beck based his on the circuit diagrams he drew for his day job; stripping the sprawling Tube network down to a neat diagram of coloured, criss-crossing lines" (Transport for London). The copy in this volume is in the first state, showing the Piccadilly Line under construction between Cockfosters and Enfield West (now Oakwood). The first Blue Guide was released in 1918 by James and Findlay Muirhead, beginning a series that would last for over 100 years. The Muirheads already had experience in publishing travel guides as the English-language editors for Baedeker, and had acquired the rights to John Murray's Handbooks in 1915. They soon came to rival the Baedecker series itself, with one reviewer writing of the 1920 England guide: "The verdict is, if you can have both books in your library, do so; but, if you can have but one, take the Blue Guide. This will probably permanently displace Baedecker as regards England" (Hopkins, p. 153). A. A.
