In den WarenkorbSee Nicolas Barker's typically-elegant obituary of Williamson in the Independent. 2pp, 4to. The obituary of the recipient Andrew Block (1892-1987) in 'The Private Library' was subtitled 'the doyen of booksellers'; his business was established in 1911. On aged and worn paper; folded three times. Signed 'Hugh Williamson:' and addressed to 'Mr Block'. Thirty-one lines in a close, calligraphic hand. Having been 'particularly lucky' every time he has called on Block, and having acquired 'the 12mo Baskerville, the Pickering in Caslon's types and the plays printed by John Bell' on his last visit, he asks him to 'keep an eye open for one or two cheap items'. Before giving a list of books he 'particularly' needs, from the Aldine Press to Baskerville, he describes his interest 'in the development of roman and italic types, which means that most of the books I need were printed before the end of the 18th century. On the other hand, I can't really afford even a guinea for a book unless it's the kind of thing I could sell again for as much as I gave, in case of need. The result is that I'm willing to put up with bad condition in the binding, missing plates and text pages etc which might put off the "proper" collector.'.

Original wraps. Zustand: Very good. First known printing of Jack London's short story "Diable-A Dog" in the June 1902 issue of Cosmopolitan Magazine, later title "Bâtard." (illustrator). Volume 33, Number 2. Original paper wrappers, title printed in red and black on covers. Solid text blocks, small closed tears and light chipping to edges of covers. Includes stories by other notable authors, including William J. Lampton, Paul Laurence Dunbar, and Richard Le Gallienne. (Dunbar, Metcalf, 48). "Diable-A Dog" was renamed Bâtard (mongrel in English) upon later publication in 1904. It follows themes of wild versus domesticated natures in dogs, similarly seen in London's novel The Call of the Wild. At the time of its inception in 1886, Cosmopolitan Magazine aimed to offer women articles on life in the home, but began publishing new fiction works in the early 1900s. Notable contributors included Jack London, as seen in this volume, as well as Upton Sinclair, Sinclair Lewis, and Kurt Vonnegut. Short stories would be published in their entireties, and longer pieces would be expanded across multiple issues to keep readers interested in upcoming publications.

In den WarenkorbAn interesting item, providing a sidelight into the process of Victorian scholarly editing and publication. Fitchew's letter is 2pp, 4to, on the outer pages of a bifolium; the inner pages being filled with notes (citations?) in a minuscule hand, possibly the recipient's. In good condition, lightly aged and worn, and folded for postage. Addressed to 'H. W. Wilson' and signed 'E. H. Fitchew'. The letter begins: 'Dear Mr. Wilson / I think it is possible we may want a little more letterpress, but probably not much. Up to end of pt. 7 we have used 82 slips. I suppose deletion & added matter about balance each other, & we may therefore reckon remainder of book on the same basis. We have 27 slips, which should fill about 56 pp.' He continues in the same vein, discussing preface and index. Ends with discussion of question, 'Would you prefer to add to Chap. IX or only to Chap X?' There is some annotation in the second hand to the left of Fitchew's signature, and beneath it an illegible note in blue pencil. The book in question is 'Nelson and His Times' by Rear-Admiral Lord Charles Beresford and H. W. Wilson, 'With many illustrations mostly from contemporary sketches, selected, arranged, and annotated by Edward H. Fitchew', which was printed by Her Majesty's Printers Eyre & Spottiswoode, and published by Harmsworth Brothers Ltd in 1898. See image of additional annotation presumed by Wilson.

In den WarenkorbA fascinating and notable piece of 19th-century publishing history: a pair of publisher's blads, in this case used by a salesman in the garnering of subscriptions for two very popular and topical part-works, Robert Montgomery Martin's The Indian Empire (1858-59) and Charles Ball's The Indian Mutiny (1858-61); each gilt stamped on the front cover, "Specimen. Not for Sale" and carrying at the end a number of pages for recording subscribers' details. The blad for The Indian Mutiny shows that our salesman was on the East Midlands circuit, with the names of two individuals recorded in Radford and Nottingham: a Thomas Brown, and a Joseph Houlton, baker, of Derby Road, Nottingham (the latter recorded in directories of the period). A blad is a sample book section used by publishers and their representatives for promotional purposes. These are particularly handsome examples, presented in their now slightly faded but nonetheless impressive cloth bindings that alone would have been a temptation to the potential book buyer, offering a choice selection of plates and the opening six or eight pages of text. Needless to say, their highly ephemeral nature makes them decidedly uncommon. Two works, large octavo. Each with steel-engraved frontispiece and vignette title page, first work with 11 plates, second with 8, both with hand-coloured engraved map of India and specimen of letterpress. Martin: original saffron morocco-grain cloth, blind ornamental foliate paneling to covers, title within a pictorial cartouche gilt to front cover, pale primrose yellow-coated endpapers; Ball: original red bead-grain cloth, blind ornamental paneling to covers, title within pictorial cartouche gilt (incorporating a portrait of Sir Henry Havelock) to front cover, pale primrose yellow-coated endpapers Bindings a little rubbed and stained, inner hinges cracked, back cover of The Indian Mutiny loose and holding on front cords, yet considering the nature of these pieces, remarkably well preserved.
