In den WarenkorbLondon: W. Clarke and J. Stockdale, 1791. Published by a Future Prime Minister in Response to the Hastings Impeachment Trial, One of the Most Sensational of the Eighteenth Century [Perceval, Spencer (1762-1812)]. A Review of the Arguments in Favor of the Continuance of Impeachments, Notwithstanding a Dissolution. London: Printed for W. Clarke, Portugal-Street, Lincoln's Inn, and J. Stockdale, Piccadilly, 1791. [ii], 123, [1] pp. Lacking half-title, text complete. Octavo (8-1/4" x 5"; 21 x 13 cm). Stab-stitched pamphlet, disbound and resewn. Moderate toning, occasional, mostly unobtrusive light foxing, light soiling to exterior, early ink annotation (attributing the work) and pencil notation to title page, early pencil corrections to pp. 3 and 31. A good copy. $350. * Only edition. This historical review of parliamentary impeachments was published in response to the then-ongoing impeachment trial of Warren Hastings [1732-1818] for alleged improprieties and abuses as Governor-General of the Presidency of Fort William (Bengal). Perhaps the most sensational English trial of the eighteenth century, the proceedings had begun in 1787 but took seven years due to adjournments of Parliament. The trial became a flashpoint for debate about the future of the British Empire and the rights of the colonized; Edmund Burke led the prosecution. In the end Hastings was overwhelmingly acquitted and his vision of absolute control in service of British nationalism would become the legacy of the Empire in India. Spencer Perceval, a British barrister and politician who served as solicitor general and attorney general, ultimately became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He was in office from 1809 until his assassination in May 1812, which led to a sensational trial in its own right. Perceval, an Anglo-Irish politician and pamphleteer, published two pamphlets critical of Prime Minister Henry Pelham and his brother Thomas Pelham-Holles in 1749. Our pamphlet, a satirical "trial," is a response to one of these. Perceval is tried before the Lord Chief Justice Truth, the Lord Chief Baron Reason, and Mr. Justice Honesty for publishing a "scandalous, and malicious pamphlet.stuff'd full of virulent invectives, false facts, gross, scandalous, and scurrilous representations of men and things" (3). Unsurprisingly, the jury finds Perceval guilty. English Short-Title Catalogue T144606. London: Printed for R. Freeman, 1749. (illustrator).…
