The author describes conditions in the most poverty-stricken areas of London, including St Giles, Saffron Hill and Bermondsey. On the front pastedown is the armorial bookplate of Lord Farnham.On the verso of the front free endpaper is an ownership inscription which someone has failed to ink out thoroughly enough to render it illegible, and which reads, ''H.A. Sotheran, 136, Strand, W.C., May 9th 1889''. This was the address of the booksellers Willis and Sotheran, a former incarnation of the present firm of Sotheran's.
