Hardcover. Lomberg, Jon (illustrator). Reprint. Second printing [stated]. Sewn binding. Paper over boards. xii, [2], 237, [5] p. Further Reading. Glossary. Index. Jon Lomberg (born 1948) is an American space artist and science journalist. He was Carl Sagan's principal artistic collaborator for more than twenty years from 1972 through 1996. In 1998, the International Astronomical Union officially named Asteroid Lomberg in recognition of his achievements in science communication. In 1972, Lomberg showed some of his paintings to astronomer Carl Sagan, who then asked him to illustrate The Cosmic Connection. This was the beginning of their quarter century of collaboration on many projects, including the Cosmos series (for which Lomberg created the talent pool and as chief artist won a Primetime Emmy Award); the Cosmos book; Broca's Brain; NASA's interstellar Voyager Golden Record; the original cover art for Sagan's novel Contact; and the opening sequence from Earth through the Solar System and its galaxy and beyond for the Contact film. At Sagan's request, Lomberg designed the original sailing ship logo for the Planetary Society in 1981. Very good in very good dust jacket. DJ has slight wear and soiling.

The cosmos seems to be in crisis, and you don't have to be a rocket scientist to see it. How, for instance, can the universe be full of stars far older than itself? How could space have once expanded faster than the speed of light? How can most of the matter in the universe be "missing"? And what kind of truly weird matter could possibly account for ninety percent of the universe's total mass? This brief and witty book, by the award-winning science writer Donald Goldsmith, takes on these and other key questions about the origin and evolution of the cosmos. By clearly laying out what we currently know about the universe as a whole, Goldsmith lets us see firsthand, and judge for ourselves, whether modern cosmology is in a state of crisis. Einstein's Greatest Blunder? puts the biggest subject of all--the story of the universe as scientists understand it--within the grasp of English-speaking earthlings. When Albert Einstein confronted a cosmological contradiction, in 1917, his solution was to introduce a new term, the "cosmological constant." For a time, this mathematical invention solved discrepancies between his model and the best observations available, but years later Einstein called it the "greatest blunder" of his career. And yet the cosmological constant is still alive today--it is one of the "fudge factors" employed by cosmologists to make their calculations fit the observational data. Theoretical cosmologists, shows Goldsmith, continually reshape their models in an honest (if sometimes futile) effort to explain apparent chaos as cosmic harmony--whether their specific concern is the age and expansion rate of the cosmos, hot versus cold "dark matter," the inflationary theory of the big bang, the explanation of large-scale structure, or the density and future of the universe. Engagingly written and richly illustrated with photographs taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, Einstein's Greatest Blunder? is a feast for the eye and mind. ; Donald Goldsmith has written more than a dozen books, including Exoplanets, The Runaway Universe, The Hunt for Life on Mars, Supernova, and, with Neil deGrasse Tyson, Origins. He has received lifetime achievement awards for astronomy education from the American Astronomical Society and for the popularization of astronomy from the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. ; FINE/FINE. Book.

First edition of this fascinating story which covers the story of the interstellar record. Quarto, original cloth, illustrated. Association copy, lengthily inscribed by both Carl Sagan and Anne Druyan on the half-title page, "For Shirley, With my deep gratitude for contributions numerous, substantive, and spiritual to the success of the project and this book. With love, Carl Sagan" and "Dearest Shirley - There is no one in all the millions of miles that Voyager crosses like you - for all your kindness, your implementation, your goodness - my deep love - I'm so lucky to know you and I treasure our friendship. Annie." The recipient, Sagan's executive assistant Shirley Arden, was instrumental in Saganâs success and handled all travel arrangements and publications in his most illustrious years which saw the Viking landings on Mars, the Cosmos television series, and the Voyager mission. Ann and Carl dedicated their book Comet (1995) to Arden, and she acted as the matron of honor in their wedding. Very good in a very good dust jacket. Jacket design by Robert Aulicino. An exceptional association. In 1977, two extraodinary spacecraft called Voyager were launched to the stars. Affixed to each Voyager craft was a gold-coated copper phonograph record as a message to possible extra-terrestrial civilizations that might encounter the spacecraft in some distant space and time. Each record contained 118 photographs of our planet; almost 90 minutes of the world's greatest music; an evolutionary audio essay on "The Sounds of Earth"; and greetings in almost sixty human languages (and one whale language). This book is an account, written by those chiefly responsible for the contents of the Voyager Record, of why they did it, how they selected the repertoire, and precisely what the record contains.
