Two chapters examine Diaspora communities; one looks at the integration of historical Indian communities or Hindustanis in Suriname and in the Netherlands while the other considers modern attempts at maintaining ties to Andean countries in the hope of bolstering co-development strategies for the future. The chapters provide new insights on how women were treated in predominantly patriarchal plantation systems. Moreover, they pay attention to the women who were left behind while their spouses migrated overseas for employment. There is a body of literature on the Indian Diaspora in Europe and North America that has focused on issues relating to assimilation, accommodation, identity formation and remittances.
