In den WarenkorbHardback. Zustand: Very Good. H. Gronvold and G.E. Lodge (illustrator). First Edition. 1913. First edition. xv, 260pp. and 27 coloured plates. Top edge gilt. The author has inscribed and signed the half-title page thus: "With the author's kindest regard & many thanks for much help & assistance - E.C. Stuart Baker, O.B.E., F.L.S., etc. 13.3.23". There is a name written by a different hand below the inscription. Edward Charles Stuart Baker (1864-1944) was a British ornithologist and police officer, and spent most of his career in India in the Assam Police. During his spare time he studied and catalogued the birds of India, and published several books on the subject. The present work is devoted to the pigeons and doves of India, and the total number of species and subspecies dealt with is fifty-one. An attempt has been made to collate, as far as possible, all information recorded up to date, and to add as many sporting and field notes as have been obtainable, together with a certain amount of original matter. The book is bound in the original dark green half leather over lighter green cloth covered boards with gold titling and five thin raised bands on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and light soiling to the boards and some scuffing with a bit of lifting to the leather on the corner tips and top spine edge of the rear board. There is also scuffing to the leather on the spine edges and bands on the spine. The spine is slightly faded. The contents are tight and clean with foxing to most of the pages, including the title-page. The foxing is mostly light although a few pages are more heavily affected. The colour plates are printed on a different quality of paper and are largely free from foxing apart from some light marks on the back of some of the plates. PLEASE NOTE: This is a heavy book and extra postage may apply for delivery outside the UK. SIGNED COPY.

A very good set with an interesting provenance.[Eric Hosking OBE, Hon FRPS, FBIPP (1909-1991) was widely acknowledged as one of the world's most eminent natural history photographers, "Perhaps the most famous bird photographer ever to have lived" (Gemma Padley). He was pioneering and developed new techniques, especially the use of flash photography and automatic shutter release technology, which enabled him to photograph birds at night and freeze birds in flight for the first time. Famously, when just 28 he lost an eye to a tawny owl while climbing up to a hide in rural Wales, the event which inspired the ingeneous title of his autobiography "An Eye for a Bird", 1970. Over his exceptionally long career he photographed over 1,800 species, and his pictures have appeared in some 1,000 books, including the popular New Naturalist series, of which he was photographic editor. Hosking was not only a photographer of birds but also a highly knowledgeable ornithologist. Size: 20cm x 27cm. Book.
