Leather. Zustand: Good. None (illustrator). A very scarce collection of lectures on the Bible, covering both the Old and the New Testament. Covering topics such as history, prophecy and retrospective views on the teachings of the Bible. Edward Hawke Locker (1777-1849) was an English watercolourist (producing works now in the V&A and British Museum) and administrator of the Royal Naval Hospital, Greenwich. The lectures in this book were delivered on board HMS Culloden whilst Locker served in the Navy. In a half-calf binding with marbled boards. Externally sound, with some rubbing to the boards and some wear to the extremities (particularly the head of the spine). Wear to joints. Internally, firmly bound. Front endpapers missing. Pages are age-toned with some scattered spotting throughout. Loss to pages 127-128, not affecting the text. Good. book.

Each plate has a separately paginated chapter to accompany it. Book Condition: Very Good. Half calf ; original spine laid down over modern leather with patterned paper-covered boards. Five raised bands, gilt stamped titles and decoration, aeg. Leather a little rubbed to extremities but a sound tight copy. Sporadic foxing, heaviest to plate edges; no annotation or inscriptions. Scarce.

Printed blue paper wraps with red cloth and roan spines. 16 famous British naval officers and maritime victories -- including Captain Cook and the Spanish Armada -- along with brief biographies. Many of these portraits were donated by King George IV and became the "nucleus of the National Maritime Museum" and still hang in what was Greenwich Naval Hospital, now the Royal Naval College. Some foxing and waterstaining to boards and pages throughout, and edges uncut. Part I (vol. 1) original spine is missing but binding has been repaired and is still intact. Scarce. Small 4to. Illustrated.

Plate 41 "Alcazar, Toledo", with accompanying letterpress leaf, is bound in preceding Plate 37 "Alcazar, ditto [Segovia]", which threw the annotator [they numbered both plates 41 and 37 as 37in the top corner, then skipped a number, so that from plate 43 onwards the numbering of the 60 plates again matches the numbering in the Contents list ("Views in Spain").] Title leaf with some foxing, minor staining and small abrasion to lower corner. Split to gutter at the rear hinge. Small 1/4" wide by 1/2" high chip to leather at tail end of upper joint. Minor rubbing and marks to leather boards. Plates generally very good with minimal foxing. Some foxing to final plate. No previous owner's markings. ; 60 lithographed plates + lithographed title with vignette illustration. Each plate accompanied by a leaf of letterpress. Without half-title page. Pagination: [2 (title)] [8 (preface)] [2 (contents - "Views in Spain"; "Errata" at end on verso)] (i)-ii ("To The Lord John Russell") [60] leaves letterpress + 60 plate leaves. Contemporary full red calf binding, with decorative gilt panels to both boards. Spine with gilt decoration, 5 bands, and leather lettering piece. Gilt decoration to edges of boards. Ex libris Cholmeley of Brandsby Hall, Yorkshire, with their armourial bookplate to front pastedown. Minor scuffing and discolouration to boards, occasional light foxing, generally an excellent, clean copy of this early example of lithography. James Glaisher (1809-1903) was a founder member of the Meterological Society, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1849. Rebound in modern half leather binding with marbled papered boards. Chipped spine title lettering piece from earlier binding laid down on spine. Page dimensions: 298 x 239mm. 23 chapters, each chapter paginated separately. With 24 plates. Some foxing and dampstains to margins of plates, but generally very good, and clean in the printed area. Tissue guards present to all plates. Most plates are portraits, one is of a ship and three are of ships or nautical battle scenes.
