First edition, printing the speeches of the three men in parliament on 26 and 27 November 1914, addressing the nation's ability to fight a longer war of attrition, as it became increasingly evident there would be no quick victory by Christmas. Churchill's speech, as First Lord of the Admiralty, assessed the nation's naval capabilities and its ability to protect merchant shipping. First edition of this well-illustrated early life of Nelson. Although inevitably hagiographic in tone, Lloyd's is probably one of the more carefully written and accurate of those biographies issued in the immediate aftermath of Nelson's death, however the author does predictably forgo mention of Nelson's scandalous association with Emma Hamilton. Extremely uncommon, perhaps a dozen institutional locations traced world-wide. Stating in his preface that "amidst the torrent of deserved eulogium now pouring from all quarters" he wishes to avoid "swelling the tide", the author instead offers the present work as "an accurate, faithful, and circumstantial detail of actions". Good to his word, the text is in large drawn from the bulletins and the correspondence of participants, concluding with the text of Nelson's will and an account of his funeral, "the most affecting spectacles that ever impressed the hearts of our assembled countrymen". Throughout, the text is enhanced by a sequence of sprightly, if slightly naive plates, illustrating the high spots of the admiral's life including the inevitable polar bear, the boarding of the San Josef, the Nile, Copenhagen, Trafalgar, Nelson shot, and the funeral car. These plates are on a thicker paper than the text, much prone to browning, brittleness, hygroscopic damping, and fragility on the folds, with the result that they are often in poor condition, damaged, or absent. This copy has the full complement, showing their age in places and with some light repair, but present and correct. As noted by Michael Nash in The Nelson Companion, the unusual provincial publication of this biography in Ormskirk, a small town near Liverpool, provides an interesting footnote. In 1806 Liverpool was the major UK port for Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore, packet boats left the Mersey every week carrying mail, light freight, and occasional passengers. Lloyd's book appeared very shortly after Trafalgar, and it reached America well ahead of the London publications, a copy finding its way to Boston "where it was pirated by one William Bolton and published in March 1806" (White p. 179). Evidence from the London Gazette [16719] suggests that John Fowler "Printer, Dealer and Chapman" went bankrupt and was discharged in 1809, he died in 1815. Cowie 132; NMM, II, 914.
