LLOYD, George Thomas (1809-1871). Thirty-Three Years in Tasmania and Victoria being the Actual Experience of the Author interspersed with historic jottings, narratives, and counsel to emigrants. London: Houlston and Wright, 1862. 8vo., (7 6/8 x 5 inches). Fine folding lithographed frontispiece map "Emigration Map of the World" with original hand-colour in full. Original publisher's maroon cloth, gilt and blind (a little rubbed). First edition. "The life of the lord of a Tasmanian manor in the early days, from 1822 to 1829, was not, however, replete with unalloyed happiness. Indeed, during that period, a settler's life was not only fraughte with discomforts and difficulties, but was attended with considerable danger, from the spears of the wily savages, and from the predatory visits of outlawed convicts and Bushrangers. "Settlers in the interior were consequently ever in an unenviable state of agitation and alarm. Their energies were literally cramped, for the reason, that, they were compelled at all times, morning, noon, and night, to be well armed and ever on the alert, as they valued their lives and property. Whilst much tat and good generalship were required in devising the most efficient mode of fortifying their position, it was necessary to clear away every tree, log, or thick shrub, which might possibly afford shelter to the enemy within ball-range" (page 171). Ferguson, 11678 (not mentioning the map).

Members of the committee were Mr Ascroft; Thomas Bayley, Caldwell, Captain Chaloner, Garfit, Hazell, Jeffreys, Lloyd-George, A K Loyd, Dr M'Donnell, Price, T W Russell, Warr, George Whiteley and Mr Yerburgh. There are a few paragraphs relating to extortionate money-lending by Jews at ruinous rates of interest, these men being absolutely loathed by the Jewish community and being strongly condemned from the Synagogues. The committee was set up on 16 February 1898 to 'Inquire into the alleged evils attendant upon the system of Money Lending by professional Money Lenders, at high rates of interest, or under oppressive conditions as to repayment, and to Report theron'.

Zustand: Very Good. London, Sumfield & Jones, 1862. 8vo. XII,515 pp. & 1 large folding hand-coloured lithographed map. Uncut in original green blindstamped publisher's cloth (with the binder's label of Burn, London). Spine slightly darkened and head and tail a little bumped, extremities rubbed. Light marginal browning throughout with some occasional light soiling. Small stain to outer margin of p. 194. Neat closed tear in margin of map. With the author's handwritten dedication to Alfred Forrester in the top margin of the title page and the armorial bookplate of John Apris. From the library of Gunnar Brusewitz. Ferguson Bibliography of Australia 11678 not mentioning the map. In 1819 Lloyd was just ten years old when he sailed with his uncle, Charles Jeffreys, from England to Van Diemen's Land, as Tasmania was then called. After a life as a sheep farmer and importer of wines he died in Geelong in 1871. Notice of his death in the "Geelong Advertiser" highlights how the genocidal Black War against the aboriginal Tasmanians had changed the island's population in just a few decades: "The changes that he saw during his lifetime were strange and wonderful to a degree. When he arrived, the Barabool tribes of natives numbered three hundred, and of white men there were not a score in Geelong. When he died there was only one native left, whilst on the other hand he left behind him a town containing 20000 of his fellow-countrymen, who lament the loss of an enterprising and good man". The large folding map is entitled "Emigration Map of the World" and shows the routes of British emigrants to Australia, North America, South Africa, India, and Hong Kong. The recipient of the book is possibly the English author and artist Alfred Henry Forrester (1804-1872).
