Hardcover. Zustand: Sehr gut. Schutzumschlag. 1. Auflage. First edition of one of the most comprehensive and influential studies ever published on the art of Japanese bamboo basketry. This large and beautifully produced volume is lavishly illustrated with superb photographs and detailed close-up studies of 232 baskets, revealing the remarkable refinement of form, structure, and surface characteristic of this distinctive art form. The works illustrated are drawn from the celebrated collection of Lloyd Cotsen, widely regarded as the largest and most important assemblage of Japanese bamboo baskets in private hands. Spanning more than a century, the pieces range from elegant late-nineteenth-century flower baskets made for the tea ceremony to innovative sculptural works produced in the 1990s as autonomous works of art. Works by all artists designated Living National Treasures are represented, offering an unparalleled survey of the tradition at its highest level. In addition to the extensive photographic catalogue, the volume includes several scholarly essays addressing the history and aesthetics of bamboo basketry, biographical sketches of leading masters, a survey of weaving techniques, and essential reference tools, including a chronology, bibliography, and glossary. Folio (36.4 x 28.0 cm). Text in English. Illustrated profusely with colour photographs. Publisher's mustard-yellow cloth with silver Japanese title to board and English title to spine; photo-illustrated dust jacket. Housed in original mustard-yellow cloth-bound slipcase.
