A particularly substantial and extensively illustrated Victorian edition of John Howie's celebrated Scots Worthies, the classic collection of biographies commemorating the leading figures of Scotland's Reformation and Covenanting history. First published in 1775, Howie's work preserved the lives and testimonies of reformers, ministers, Covenanters and martyrs who struggled for Presbyterianism and religious liberty in Scotland during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. This enlarged edition, edited by the prominent Scottish Presbyterian historian and author Rev. J. A. Wylie (1808-1890), considerably extends the original work with additional biographies and historical notes, together with Wylie's substantial introductory history of the period. Among the figures represented are John Knox and many of the leading personalities of the Scottish Reformation and Covenanting movements. Particularly impressive in this large-format edition are its numerous full-page portraits and historical illustrations, together with a folding facsimile of the National Covenant. Wylie was a prolific historian of Protestantism and is best remembered for his multi-volume History of Protestantism, making his editorship particularly appropriate to Howie's strongly Presbyterian account of Scottish history. A good, and very substantial, hardback with black leather spine and corners, with cloth over boards featuring John Knox gilt portrait to front. Spine with raised bands, and tooled gilt decoration to compartments. Covers are scuffed and bumped and cloth colour faded with some soiling. Binding is completely sound. Some spotting to endpapers, and offsetting to tissue guards from Plates. The Plates themselves remain very good indeed with just the very occasional scattered spot. With gilt edges all round. The fold-out featuring the covenant has a tear where it meets the gutter and has an archival tape repair to rear. Text in English. (iv) titles/contents + 8pp Recommendations to this edition + lxxxiv + 872pp + 30 Plates, all but one with bound-in tissue guards, including frontispiece of John Knox and fold-out facsimile of the Covenant. Appleton and Company, 1878 Condition: Good Appletons Cyclopaedia of Applied Mechanics VOL I (edited by Park Benjamin, Ph.D., LL.B.) is a 19th-century engineering reference work—a comprehensive technical encyclopedia of mechanical engineering and the mechanical arts. Being first published in parts beginning around 1878-1879 and then collected into volumes, it was designed as a practical and illustrated dictionary for engineers, mechanics, inventors, and students of the era. Original 19th-century edition bound in calfskin boards with black and brown leather, featuring title boxes on the spine. The covers show some general wear consistent with age, including light discoloration to the leather and minor edge bumping. The spine has some cracking, but remains firm and intact with no loose pages. The interior is clean and well-preserved, with pages free of writing, marks, tears, or highlighting. Text and illustrations are clear and complete. Overall, a very solid and attractive copy, especially considering the book's age—really good condition for an 1878 volume. Geological techniques are widely used in two aspects of serious criminal investigations: (1) the search for clandestine burial sites, based on near-surface geophysics or through the detection of decomposition signals and (2) the analysis of trace evidence to identify its source location or test the possible association between the trace evidence and a known location of an offence. Although geoforensics is used in such investigations world-wide there are still considerable gaps in the published literature. An interesting text on the subject of Logic, this handsome Glasgow University prize volume was awarded in 1891 under the authority of John Veitch, Professor of Logic and Rhetoric in the University of Glasgow. The presentation label is completed in manuscript for Charles W. Thomson, for the Class of Logic and Rhetoric, and is attested "J Veitch Prof." in his own hand. Bound in an attractive contemporary full calf prize binding by Maclehose of Glasgow. Inside the book is a loose newspaper cutting from 1894 on the occasion of Professor Veitch's death, discussing his many achievements, and his involvement in this particular title. One of a remarkable group of Glasgow University prize volumes awarded between 1889 and 1895 to Charles William Thomson (1871-.), a notably distinguished student who won fifteen University prizes and graduated M.A. Thomson subsequently pursued a prominent career in Scottish education, serving as Rector of several schools including Larkhall Academy, and was also an author and advocate of Scottish national interests. A founding member and later President of the Scottish Patriotic Association, he is best remembered for his substantial two-volume historical work Scotland's Work and Worth (1909-10). His identity and academic record have been confirmed from the matriculation, prize and General Council records held by the University of Glasgow Archives & Special Collections. Some scuffing to leather and light wear to spine, but all soundly bound. A few surface scrapes to the leather. With marbled endpapers and matching marbled text block edges. A University prize presentation label to the front pastedown records the award to Charles W. Thomson in the Logic and Rhetoric class in 1890-91, and is signed "J Veitch Prof.", in his capacity as Professor of Logic and Rhetoric at the University, but also a nice association copy in that he edited the work in question. The text is bright and clear throughout. Just some spotting to endpapers and the first and last few leaves. A most attractive set. Text in English.
