Arthur Preston, Agnes Baker, Gabrielle Lambrick and, more recently and amongst others, Mrs. J. Smith and Mr. J. Carter, Mr. D.G.E. Hurd and Mr. N. Hammond have all produced work of great interest and importance for those wishing to study the history of the town. Mrs. M. Cox, in addition to work previously published, is engaged on the Herculean task of compiling a general history of Abingdon which will replace and amplify that written by James Townsend in the early years of this century. It is hoped that the essays printed in this book may help to fill some of the small gaps which remain in the story or enlarge on one or two topics dealt with briefly by other writers. For the most part they are based on the wealth of material held by the Town Council, the Master and Governors of Christ's Hospital, the Churchwardens of St. Helen's and the Berkshire Record Office. One of several papers presented by the author to the Society - this one published separately, as indicated by an ink stamp on the bottom of the front cover. There is some age discolouration to the covers. The front cover is detached at the bottom for about an inch. A small area of loss to the surface of the paper cover bottom right. A few small marks and some small indentations to covers, which don't go through to the pages. Corners slightly bumped. Tiny tear with crease to the top of last 2 leaves. Any other imperfections minor/negligible. A nice copy. 62 pages plus 2 plates. RARE.
