Liveing and Dewar attempted to correlate line and band spectra with atomic and molecular states. They published seventy-eight papers between 1877 and 1904. Dewar and Liveing accurately determined the absorption spect…ra of many elements (especially metallic vapors) and compounds. They studied the general conditions affecting the excitation of spectra and, in particular, the ultraviolet emission spectra of many metals. George Downing Liveing became professor of chemistry at Cambridge in 1861; he was joined by Sir James Dewar in 1875 who became Jacksonian professor of experimental philosophy and directed the work of that chair to chemistry. "In 1878 they began a long series of spectroscopic investigations which continued till 1900. Their joint papers were republished as a single volume by the Cambridge University Press in 1915.
