Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. The format is approximately 8.75 inches by 11.25 inches. iv, 212 pages. Footnotes. Illustrations. Front cover is decorated and had gilt lettering. Front cover clearly states THIS IS NOT A REPRINT. No dust jacket present. Cover has slight wear and soiling. Printed largely in a two-column format. From 1942-44 the 90th Bombardment Group flew Consolidated B-24 Liberators to bomb Japanese targets, operating from Australia and then New Guinea. It was awarded two United States Distinguished Unit Citations and the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation for its combat service in China, the Netherlands East Indies, New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago, Leyte, and Luzon. It was inactivated in the Philippines in early 1946. This is the story of the first unit to take the almost untried B-24 into action in the Southwest Pacific. From 1942 until the Japanese surrendered 34 months later, the 90th Bomb Group relentlessly carried the war to the enemy across vast expanses of featureless ocean and trackless jungle and through some of the world's most treacherous weather. Often in their own words, this is the story of the men who flew those missions, and of those who labored below so that they could be flown. The group was first organized as the 90th Bombardment Group at Key Field, Mississippi in April 1942 as a Consolidated B-24 Liberator unit. The group's original squadrons were the 10th Reconnaissance Squadron and the 319th, 320th and 321st Bombardment Squadrons, although within a week of activation the 10th was renamed the 400th Bombardment Squadron. The group trained with Liberators in the southeastern United States under III Bomber Command until August. The group moved to Willow Run Airport, Michigan for conversion training on newly manufactured Ford Liberators. Assigned to VII Bomber Command with B-24Ds, The unit moved to Hickam Field, Hawaii in September. The group arrived in northern Queensland, Australia in November 1942 and began bombardment missions under V Bomber Command almost immediately. The group attacked enemy airfields, troop concentrations, ground installations and shipping in New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago, Palau and the southern Philippines. The group was awarded a Distinguished Unit Citation for operations in Papua through January 1943, The unit participated in the Battle of Bismarck Sea in March 1943, and earned another citation for strikes on enemy airfields at Wewak, New Guinea in September 1943 despite heavy flak and fighter opposition. During 1944, the 90th supported the New Guinea Campaign through the end of June, then made long-range raids on oil refineries at Balikpapan, Borneo, in September and October. In January 1945, the group moved to the Philippines and supported ground forces on Luzon, attacked industrial targets on Formosa, and bombed railways, airfields, and harbor facilities on the Asiatic mainland. Shortly before the end of the war in the Pacific, the 90th moved to Okinawa, from which it would be able to strike the Japanese home islands. After VJ Day, the group flew reconnaissance missions over Japan and ferried Allied prisoners of war from Okinawa to Manila. Ceased operations by November 1945. The group was inactivated in the Philippines in early 1946. Lithography by Procolor. (illustrator).…

In den WarenkorbThird Edition, corrected, xix,117,[3]pp., 2 fold-out lithographed plates, the first containing twelve figures of tools and implements, the second nine figures of printing presses and parts, both plates are lightly water-marked affecting the image, & with 1" marginal tear to vertical fold of each, final leaf includes publisher's advertisements for two additional titles by Hullmandel; front & back endpapers soiled, with early owner's signature (L. Stilson) & date on front pastedown, final two blank leaves bit stained, half calf with early marbled paper over boards, red leather label (3x2") with gilt border & title, "A Manual of Lithography", & the name "L. Stilson" added to front board; spine worn & rubbed with 1-1/4" piece missing at head & small label with black "C" at foot; 3" split in front joint; corners, edges & joints worn, paper boards chipped, edges of cover label chipped. Hullmandel's best know work and most influential publication is his book 'The art of drawing on stone' which was first published in 1824. But in terms of establishing lithography in Britain, his translation from the French of this treatise by Raucourt de Charleville was probably just as important. This third and final edition contains some important new additions. Colonel Antoine Raucourt was chief engineer at the Ecole des Ponts et Chaussées in Paris and ran its in-plant lithographic press. His book was originally published in Toulon in 1819. Hullmandel thought highly of Raucourt's treatise and wrote in the preface: "The books which have hitherto been published on lithography are very imperfect, and are much more adapted to persons who already understand the art than those who wish to learn it. I have repeatedly wished for a guide to explain the new accidents which occur every instant, and which. appear each time so new and intricate, that the beginner is consequently tempted to give up all hopes of ever succeeding. I am consequently better enabled to appreciate the value of this excellent treatise on lithography, and hesitate not an instant to pronounce it the best work which has ever been published on the art." Light foxing;,OCLC Number / Unique Identifier:74119221.First edition of one of Salvator's rarest works. Contains 87 unnumbered color chromolithographic plates depicting the folk costumes of the Croatian Littoral, Dalmatia, the Dalmatian Hinterland, the Bay of Kotor, and Montenegro. Each illustration is accompanied by text. The chromolithographs were created based on paintings by Franz Bohumil Doubek, Paul Janowitz, Emil Lauffer, Peter Maixner, and Guido Manes, which were in turn based on the author's watercolors and photographs by Antonio Vives. A list of illustrations (plates) appears at the beginning of the book, following the preface. Like most of the author's works, this one was published anonymously. In 1870, the author began publishing the series *Die Serben an der Adria. Ihre Typen und Trachten* (The Serbs on the Adriatic: Their Types and Costumes), which, according to the original subscription prospectus, was intended to comprise 100 plates and accompanying text. The author was not named; only the artists commissioned to create the paintings under his supervision?Emil Lauffer, Guido Manes, and Petr Maixner?were listed. By 1878, nine fascicles containing a total of 45 plates (without accompanying text) had been published, after which printing ceased. These 45 plates, along with another 42 plates, an introductory text, and brief descriptions, were republished in the present volume.Regions: Croatian Littoral, Dalmatia, Bay of Kotor, MontenegroLudwig Salvator von Habsburg (Florence, August 4, 1847 - Brandýs nad Labem, October 12, 1915) was an Austrian archduke, scholar, and explorer, and a member of the Tuscan branch of the Habsburg-Lorraine dynasty. After leaving Tuscany due to political circumstances, his family settled in Bohemia in 1859. He studied philosophy, law, natural sciences, and art in Prague. As was customary for members of the ruling dynasty, he received private tutoring. The harsher climate of Bohemia did not suit his health, so he would often spend several months in Venice to stabilize his condition. As early as age 14, during his first stay in Venice, he began recording his travel impressions. During his time in Venice, he undertook his first trips to Trieste and Istria. His travels grew increasingly extensive, taking him as far as Heligoland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and England, as well as Spain, Gibraltar, and Tunisia. He dedicated his life to scientific research in the Mediterranean, sailing the region for decades aboard his steam yachts *Nixe I* and *Nixe II*, usually accompanied by an entourage of about twenty people. He published more than fifty works. He was an honorary member of six academies of sciences and some thirty scientific institutions, and a patron of scientific and artistic projects.Prvo izdanje jednog od najrje?ih Salvatorovih djela. 87 nenumeriranih kromolitografskih plo?a u boji s prikazom narodnih no?nji Hrvatskog primorja, Dalmacije, Dalmatinske zagore, Boke Kotorske, Crne Gore. A very good set with fine plates. First edition of this comprehensive report on one of the most important scientific and archaeological missions of the nineteenth century, the 1864 expedition to the Dead Sea undertaken by the visionary art collector, archaeologist, and scientist Honoré Paul Joseph d'Albert, duc de Luynes (1802-1867). Along with an atlas containing 78 reproductions of photographs by Louis Vignes (1831-1896), Jardin (fl. 1864), and Henri Joseph Sauvaire (1831-1896), this work documents "the first systematic attempt to survey and photograph the geological features and cities of the Dead Sea basin in present-day Jordan. In addition to mapping the Dead Sea area, the expedition made significant contributions to the geological and paleontological knowledge of the region and also to an understanding of the chemical composition of the lake's waters" (GRI). Louis Vignes, a lieutenent-commander in the French navy and director since 1860 of the port in Beirut, was chosen by de Luynes as photographer for the expedition because of his knowledge of the Levant. "Vignes began to photograph immediately upon arrival in Beirut and continued to do so during the ride south throughout Sidon, Tyre, Nablus, and Jerusalem. From March 14 until May 29 the party sailed the entire Dead Sea on a special iron vessel designed by Vignes to be dismantled for easy trasportation" (Perez). A preliminary account, edited by Vignes, appeared as Extrait des notes d'un voyage d'exploration à la mer Morte, dans le Wady Arabah, sur la rive gauche du Jourdain et dans le désert de Palmyre (Paris: H. Plon, 1865). This work essentially comprised a key to the two maps drawn by Vignes, with assistance from Dr. Gustave Combe. The larger of the two maps charted the Jordan Rift Valley from the southern end of the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Akabah; the second map depicts the Dead Sea and its immediate vicinity. "In addition to tracing the expedition's routes, place names, elevations, vegetation, land conditions, natural features and many other geomorphic and climatic details are recorded on the maps" (GRI). In the Atlas volume of the Voyage, these two maps have been combined into a single map (printed surface: 69.7 by 28.8 cm). In 1866 de Luynes made a second expedition to the region, accompanied by the archaeologist Christophe Edouard Mauss and Henri Sauv.…
