A survivor of Auschwitz who worked in the gassing installations and crematoria tells of the Jews he saw brought to the house of death to be burned to ashes and recounts his suicide attempt and the cruelty of the SS guard who prevented it. Filip Müller (3 January 1922 9 November 2013) was a Jewish Slovak Holocaust survivor and a member of the Sonderkommando at Auschwitz, the largest Nazi German concentration camp during World War II, where he witnessed the murders of tens of thousands of people. Müller was assigned to a Sonderkommando unit tasked with operating the killing facilities; his performing this role, he believed, was the only reason the Germans kept him alive. Müller says he came to believe that he had a duty to stay alive so that he could become a living witness to the horrors of the Holocaust. Filip Müller came to Auschwitz with one of the earliest transports from Slovakia in April 1942 and began working in the gassing installations and crematoria in May. He was still alive when the gassings ceased in November 1944. He saw millions come and disappear; by sheer luck he survived. Müller is neither a historian nor a psychologist; he is a sourceone of the few prisoners who saw the Jewish people die and lived to tell about it. 1p., 12mo. Good, on lightly-aged paper, with small scrap from white label adhering to a margin. He explains that the reason that a letter has not been forwarded to him is that he has not, 'for years, had to do with the management of "the Illustrated London News"', although he does contribute to it. Nevertheless he will try to get the recipient 'a proof of the Port[rai]t. - with great pleasure'. He adds, in a postscript at the head of the page: 'I think the Memoir was cut out from the Times'.

Green cloth over board, gilt spine title. Content very good, without markings. Binding with light wear at corners, . No dw.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with discoloration from tape at head of second leaf. Watts's handwriting is not easily legible. The male recipient of the letter is not named. In reply to a letter received the previous Friday, Watts assures him that 'the earnest desire of Mrs. Watts and myself' is 'to promote by every means in our power the comfort and happiness of your daughter, and we are not without hope that we shall succeed in achieving what we wish.' Watts will be in London the following Thursday and Friday, 'and can, without the slightest inconvenience wait upon you in Trafalgar Square at any hour (morning or evening) that you may be the most likely to be disengaged'. He has 'promised to dine with the Royal Marines at Chatham on Saturday'. The letter ends with a discussion of the 'medium of conveyance' for certain 'articles of furniture', with Watts stating, 'I should wish Miss V. to bring any thing of the kind that she may desire to bring. There is not the shadow of an objection'. A line under the signature is illegible. Included with this item is a worn copy of the original engraved portrait of Watts (by Daniel Maclise), captioned 'The Editor of "The Literary Souvenir"', from Fraser's Magazine, June 1835.

A pleasing piece of calligraphy, with the word 'Private' centred and underlined at the head, and the address to 'The Honble. Spencer Ponsonby. / Foreign Office' across the central band, with the signature at bottom left: 'Alaric Watts.' See Image.

See his entry, and Craig's, in the Oxford DNB. 13 x 9 cm envelope, with seal (no impression of any kind) in red wax over the broken flap. In good condition, lightly aged. On the front of the envelope, in Jeffrey's hand, 'To / James Gibson Craig Esqre / 7. North St Andrew Street'. Beneath this, at bottom left and between the customary lines is the signature 'F. Jeffrey'.

Both in good condition, lightly aged. ONE: 2pp, 12mo. He 'must bear the entire blame' for 'an indiscretion', and is 'exceedingly sorry'. 'Nothing was said between us in regard to the giving or withholding of addresses, & I had not at that time considered the point. But finding that the drafter of the letter had added his address, I & the fourth signatory added ours & I ventured to add yours - putting your business address, as one is apt to do, but in this case I admit most thoughtlessly, merely because I did not know your private one.' He asks him to 'use this letter as you think fit', explaining that 'The whole thing had to be arranged in a hurry at the last'. TWO: 2pp, 12mo. He has consulted with 'Vaughan', who 'thinks it wiser to take no further notice, having made our protest'. Despite there being points on which he would have liked to reply, Herford considers this 'the more dignified course'. 'It is he, not we, who is open to the charge of knowing better than the government: as usual it has been reserved for the clergyman to make proposals at once more timid & more cruel than any which commended themselves to the lay intelligence'.

1p., 12mo. In fair condition, aged and lightly-creased. The letter begins: 'Four thousand thanks for the very kind manner in which you have given the notice of my dearest wife in your last number.' The notice will be extremely gratifying 'to her family and any of the many who loved her'. Mrs Planché was also a playwright, and is thought to have collaborated with her husband on a number of works.

In good condition, folded once for postage. Signed 'F Jeffrey'. A difficult hand. Begins: 'My very Dear Lady Theresa / We must set out at the very lateston Monday the 6th May - But I have no Engagement after the 2d and shall be delighted to come longer on any of the subsequent days -'. He thanks her 'for being quite well again', adding 'Dear Charly [i.e. [his second wife Charlotte Wilkes of New York, great-niece of the English radical John Wilkes] is not entirely [settled?] this morning - a restless night'. With regard to a fever, 'Dr F. says nothing at all serious'. He ends: 'She is [?] patient'.

12mo, 1 p. In a bifolium, addressed and docketed on the reverse of the second leaf, to which the red wax seal adheres, in good condition with a clear impression of Agar-Ellis's monogram. Fair, on aged and grubby paper. If Jerdan has 'quite done' with Agar-Ellis's copy of 'G's improvements of London' asks if he will allow Agar-Ellis's 'messanger' to return it. 'If however you still wish to keep it, pray do.' Agar-Ellis has 'promised to lend it to Sir H Halford'.

On upper half of a piece of quarto paper, unevenly torn to make a piece roughly 11 x 18.5 cm. Fair: on aged paper. Part of address from previous letter to 'W. Jerdan | 267 Strand ' on reverse, which is docketed 'Procter | Miss Proby | Cornwalls poems'. Reads 'I inclose you a note left here for you | George says he will review the book for you next week - in the meantime give a flourish in your notice - 'The time does not admit of doing just to the vol. &c &c We are all a Party in this success -'. Jerdan acquired the premises at 267 Strand with his purchase of 'The Satirist' from George Manners, and retained them during the early days of his editorship of the 'Literary Gazette' (beginning circa 1819).

"Emil Schürer's Geschichte des jüdischen Volkes im Zeitalter Jesu Christi, a critical presentation of the whole evidence concerning Jewish history, institutions, and literature from 175 B.C. to A.D. 135, has rendered invaluable services to scholars for nearly a century. He requests 'the favour of an early notice in your journal, of the accompanying little volume if it be fortunate enough to meet your approbation'. The work has 'no object but to serve true religion & true liberty'. In a postscript he requests a 'copy of the paper containing the notice'. Howitt practised as a chemist in Nottingham between 1822 and 1836, when he moved to Esher, Surrey. According to his entry in the Oxford DNB, Howitt's 'Popular History of Priestcraft' 'became a standard work for plebeian advocates of church disestablishment'.

1p., 12mo. Very good, neatly tipped-in onto a piece of card. On sending the 'notices of House and Boulger', Griffis finds 'little or nothing to commend in the latter, and its title is misleading'. He asks to be sent other works 'as you receive them'.
