Trade paperback. Zustand: Very good. xviii, [2], 329, [3] pages. Footnotes. Illustrations. Maps. Notes. References Cited. Index. Foreword by Sidney Drell! A pioneering political-scientific history. . . . Lucidly composed, meticulously documented, and handsomely presented.--The Annals A fascinating and compelling story of the beginnings of the Chinese nuclear weapon program.--Arms Control Today. John Wilson Lewis (November 16, 1930 September 4, 2017) was an American political scientist. He taught at Cornell University, before joining the faculty of Stanford University, where he became the William Haas Professor of Chinese Politics. Lewis received a master's degree in 1958, and completed a Ph.D. in 1962. He specialized in ChinaUnited States relations and the Korean conflict. He began teaching at Cornell in 1961, and left for Stanford in 1968. At Stanford, Lewis became founding director of the Center for East Asian Studies, serving until 1970 when he started the Center for International Security and Arms Control, which later became the Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC) in 1983. From 1983 to 1990, Lewis led what became the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center. Lewis shared his experience of arriving at Stanford University as a specialist on the sensitive topic of China during a time of significant public unrest related to the Vietnam War. Lewis also recounted being invited to Stanford and his role in founding the Center for East Asian Studies. Lewis and Xue Litai's 1988 text China Builds the Bomb is a seminal text on the development of China's nuclear weapons program. Xue Litai is a research scholar at the Project on Peace and Cooperation in the Asian-Pacific Region at Stanford University's Center for International Security and Cooperation. His research focuses on global and regional factors that could cause armed conflicts across the Taiwan Strait and the impact produced by the crisis upon the security and stability of the Northeast-Pacific region. The authors examine why China is investing heavily in developing nuclear weapons and intercontinental missile systems. Among the explanations cited are: traditional Chinese military strategy, current perceptions of foreign threats, the historical legacy of humiliation at the hands of foreign powers, and the overpowering will of Mao Zedong. They describe how the first nuclear device was set off in 1964, and how during the following 25 years the Chinese have developed a complete triad of delivery systems--air-based, sea-based and land-based--for their nuclear force. Illustrated Edition [stated]. Presumed first printing thus.…

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good Plus. Reprint. 1995 reprint of book first published in 1993. xiii, 393pp. B&W illustrations. "Uncertain partners tells for the first time the inside story of the creation of the Sino-Soviet alliance and the origins of the Korean War. Using major new documentary sources, including cables and letters between Mao Zedong and Stalin, and interviews with key Russian, Chinese, and Korean participants, the book focuses on the domestic and foreign policy decision-making in all three countries from 1945 through October 1950. The authors examine the complex relations between Stalin, Chiang Kai-shek, and Mao during the last year of the Chinese civil war and the emergence of the Cold War. They show how the interplay of perceptions, national security policies, and personalities shaped those relations and were used by the North Korean leader Kim Il Sung to win backing for the invasion of South Korea. The authors also examine the Sino-Soviet alliance, drawing on hitherto unknown secret protocols and understandings and the records of high-level planning that led to the invasion and to the Chinese intervention in Korea. The book is illustrated with 42 photographs and two maps and is the fourth volume in the series, Studies in International Security and Arms Control, sponsored by the Center for International Security and Arms Control at Stanford University." Slight bumping to top edge at rear. The book is otherwise in excellent condition. There are no inscriptions and all contents are tight and clean.…

Trade paperback. Zustand: Very good. Presumed First Edition. xi, [1], 393, [3] pages. Images, Historical Photos. sing major new sources, including cables and letters between Mao Zedong and Stalin and interviews with key Russian, Chinese, and Korean participants, this book tells for the first time the inside story of the creation of the Sino-Soviet alliance and the origins of the Korean War. Sergei N. Goncharov is an advisor to Boris Yeltsin and a member of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. John W. Lewis is Haas Professor of Chinese Politics at Stanford University. Xue Litai is a Research Associate at the Center for International Security and Arms Control at Stanford. The Korean War (25 June 1950 27 July 1953) was an armed conflict on the Korean Peninsula fought between North Korea (Democratic People's Republic of Korea; DPRK) and South Korea (Republic of Korea; ROK) and their allies. North Korea was supported by China and the Soviet Union, while South Korea was supported by the United Nations Command (UNC) led by the United States. The conflict was one of the first major proxy wars of the Cold War. Fighting ended in 1953 with an armistice but no peace treaty, leading to the ongoing Korean conflict. Uncertain partners tells for the first time the inside story of the creation of the Sino-Soviet alliance and the origins of the Korean War. Using major new documentary sources, including cables and letters between Mao Zedong and Stalin, and interviews with key Russian, Chinese, and Korean participants, the book focuses on the domestic and foreign policy decision-making in all three countries from 1945 through October 1950.
