Lippomano served as bishop of Verona and Bergamo and as nuncio to several popes, as well as playing a prominent role in the Council of Trent. He was a distinguished author, penning a number of aids for the clergy, not least to defend Catholic doctrine against Protestantism. EDIT16 CNCE 31665; USTC 838216. Bound in full old leather, with most of the green silk ties still present, covers with some blindtooling ( fillets) and a central gilt decoration, first fly leaf renewed ( not recently), binding with traces of use but still in good order. Inside a clean copy with minimal soiling of the engraved title page. This is the second edition ( first in 1590) of Haraeus' hagiography. The engraved title page is by Van der Borcht ( see New Hollstein Van der Borcht, Book illustrations vol III n° 1209, p. 233), but this plate has a different design from the 1590 edition ! Bella marca editoriale al frontespizio (allegoria della Speranza come fanciulla in cima ad una colonna, rivolta verso il sole; motto: "Beatus vir cuius est Dominus spes eius, & non respexit in vanitates & infamias falsas"), e capilettera inc. in xilografia. Doppia appartenenza manoscritta al frontespizio, una censurata con inchiostro (la cui acidità ha provocato perdita corrispondente). Volume ampiamente scompleto: s'interrompe alla c. 184 della parte 2a (mancano i quaderni 2A8-2P8 e 2Q4). L'opera completa "Sanctorum priscorum patrum vitae" (.) di Alvise Lippomano, che fu nunzio in Portogallo e Polonia e vescovo di Bergamo e Verona, apparve in 5 volumi fra il 1551 e il 1556; i 3 successivi furono pubblicati da editori romani (Salviati, Blado) dal 1558 al 1560.
