He portrayed women at their workbenches, he took shots of lamps, vacuum cleaners and kitchen appliances. The approx. 250,000 pictures in his archive both in black and white and colour offer a rare look at the factories and the people who produced all these commodities. Although the perspective was directed by official ideals, Mende followed his own view. The project »Double Bound Economies« explores how we might approach this unique body of images today: how we can access them, how we can derive historical insights from them, and for what considerations they might represent a starting point. Besides a number of essays the book includes artistic contributions by Armin Linke, Olaf Nicolai and KP Brehmer, among others.

By contrast, the modernist architecture of the 1960s-1980s, which articulated the idea of a modern, forward-looking society, was never perceived as heritage. With the arrival of the market economy and after the independence of Uzbekistan in 1991, the architecture of the previous three decades, which focused on social issues and economy of means, lost relevance. Today, this modernist layer of Tashkent is gaining recognition as a unique artistic, cultural and social phenomenon that is best equipped to reveal the specific character of the modernization of Soviet Central Asia. More than just another 'peripheral case' of multiple modernities or a point on the global map of twentieth-century architectural modernism, this architecture is relevant to the global cultural scene, reflecting the radical aspects of the Soviet social and cultural experiment. This publication combines the materials of the Tashkent Modernism XX/XXI project, for which an international team of architects, historians and restoration experts joined forces on recording and restoring the city's modernist legacy. Armin Linke (b. 1966, Milan) is an artist working with photography and film by setting up processes that questio…n the medium, its technologies, narrative structures, and complicities within wider socio-political structures. Linke's work observes how human beings (re-)design and use space and time as social forms: it constructs questions / propositions on planning the future, on the hidden entanglements and inter-dependences within collective design practices, and on the shifting of sites of responsibility. Linke's exhibiting practice sets up performative scripts in which different voices and methods come together. The oeuvre functions as a collection of tools for demystifying different design strategies and languages. Working with his own collection, Linke challenges the conventions of photographic practice and demonstrates that photography is not the end point. In a collective approach with other artists, as well as curators, designers, architects, historians, philosophers and scientists, the narratives, questions, and propositions put forth by Linke's works and practice expand into the multiple implicated registers, centring the questions of installation and display.Currently professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich (AdBK), guest professor at ISIA Urbino, and guest artist at CERN Geneva, Linke was also an MIT Visual Arts Program research affiliate, guest professor at the IUAV Arts and Design University in Venice, professor of photography at the Karlsruhe University for Arts and Design (HfG), and artist in residence at the KHI Florenz. Linke's installation Alpi won the special prize at the 2004 Venice Biennale of Architecture and Image Capital was awarded the Kubus.Sparda Art Prize in 2019. Recent solo exhibitions include: Image Capital (with Estelle Blaschke), Centre Pompidou, Paris, Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation, Eschborn/Frankfurt, MAST, Bologna, and Museum Folkwang, Essen, 2022-2023; Earth Indices.
