Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. Gerard Sekoto's work plays a pivotal role in the development of "black art" , first in South Africa and then further afield. He worked in SA until he left for self-imposed exile in Paris in 1947. In 1939 a picture by him was bought by the Johannesburg Art Gallery and was the first piece by a "black" artist to be hung in South Africa. He left for Paris in 1947 and died in 1993 before the end of apartheid. This volume tracing his work was published in 1988 and it was intended to open people's eyes to the work of indigenous artists. The dj itself has been a little tanned. The illustration on the dj though, is not dimmed. The spine has wear. There is some scuffing and mild storage marks. The dj is in general neat, assured. The boards is healthy. They do have narrow strips of sunning along the top edges. However, the boards are neat, steady, sound. The end papers have strips of tanning from storage. The contents are mellow, pleasing. The very early pages have very shallow handling wear to the edges. The contents are elegant, very bright and evocative.
