As well as the calendar itself, this work contains anintroductory essay on various calendars, astronomy, and the Hebrew calendar, and an appendix chronology of Jewish history. Its compiler, Elias Hayyim Lindo (1783-1865), was born into what was originally a Spanish and Portuguese Sephardic congregation on St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands. He was the president of the St. Thomas congregation and also a successful merchant. Lindo settled in England around 1832, where he published his calendar, as well as a translation of the Conciliador of Manasseh ben Israel (1842), and a history of the Jews of Spain and Portugal (1849), for which he conducted extensive research in those countries. In addition to these published works, he also completed a number of translations from Hebrew literature, but in manuscript only. Lindo served several times as warden ofthe Portuguese congregation of London.
