In addition to being a moving memoir, the book is a first-hand journey through the history of the moving picture industry itself. A native of Springfield, Ohio, Gish did some stage acting as a child. The family moved to New York where one of the neighborhood youngsters with whom she became friends, her next door neighbor Gladys Smith, a child actress who had worked with D.W. Griffith (Griffith changed her name to Mary Pickford) Lillian's film career spanned 75 years beginning with her silent film shorts debut in 1912. From 1912 to 1920 she became a major film star, often associated with the films of D.W. Griffith (she had a leading role in the highest grossing movie of the silent era, Griffith's "The Birth of A Nation". In 1927, generally the end of the silent era, Vanity Fair magazine dubbed her "The First Lady of the Screen". Gish was blessed with a breathtaking, innocent beauty as photographs of the period show. Griffith utilized her expressive talents to the fullest, usually casting her as a suffering but strong heroine. Gish's interest in continuing in cinema waned in the late 20s and she returned to her great love, the theater in which she starred in the 1930s and 40s. She returned to film in 1946 and also performed in radio and on television".…
