Buch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - One of the most contentious issues facing policymakers in their efforts to curb climate change is the debate over whether renewable or nuclear energy should play a larger role, and to what extent both are needed, as well as how they can be integrated into electric grids. This book addresses these critical issues directly, providing balanced analyses and detailing the challenges these energy sources face. The primary challenges for renewable energy, particularly wind and solar, include intermittency, grid instability, and concerns regarding land use. Conversely, nuclear energy faces challenges related to high reactor costs and public concerns regarding accidents, waste management, and the potential for weapons proliferation. The book also explores other relevant energy forms, energy storage solutions, the potential of smart grids and artificial intelligence, and the necessity of electrifying transportation and other economic sectors to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.Renewables or Nuclear: Which Should Lead in Curbing Climate Change addresses the complex technical, economic, and political issues surrounding energy sources. The book is intended for a broad audience concerned about climate change, but lacking extensive knowledge of renewable or nuclear energy sources. It aims to explain the costs and benefits of each energy source and their roles in combating climate change. No technical background is required to understand the content, making this book a valuable reference for advanced high school or undergraduate college courses focused on climate change.Addresses the complex technical, economic, and political issues surrounding energy and climate change;Specifically examines one of the most contentious issues policymakers face a debate over renewable and nuclear energy; No technical background is required to understand the material covered in the book.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. First Printing [Stated]. xvi, [2], 630, [8] pages. Figures. Formulae. Tables. References. Appendixes. Index. This is a Wiley-Interscience Publication. Signed by the author with sentiment on the fep-- "With best regards Elmer E, Lewis". The previous owner's name is in ink also on the fep but at some distance from the sentiment. the author explains well what is happening in the reactor at various accident situations or what he calls as 'nuclear excursions'. Northwestern University's Emeritus Professor Lewis's research has included combining finite elements with other methods for the solution of the Boltzmann equation for neutron transport problems in six-dimensional space-angle-energy phase space. Applications are primarily to the simulation of neutron transport in nuclear reactor cores. His current investigations are focused on neutron transport methods for treating the complex interactions between fuel-coolant lattice structures and more global effects in large power reactor cores. Under investigation are hybrid finite element and finite subelement formulations for treating spatial variables, tailored spherical harmonic expansions in angle, and preconditioned Krylov algorithms for the solution response matrix methods on parallel computers. A second area of interest is reliability and risk assessment, focusing on how it relates to the engineering design process and particularly on the complex relationships between how technical experts and the public perceive the risks that accompany modern technology. Professor Lewis when this item was catalogued still taught courses in nuclear reactor physics and reliability engineering. Lewis earned three degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign: a bachelor's in Engineering Physics in 1960, and a master's and Ph.D. in Nuclear Power Reactor Engineering (NPRE) in 1962 and 1964, respectively. Lewis served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Ordnance Corps and as a Ford Foundation Fellow and Assistant Professor of Nuclear Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) before joining Northwestern's faculty in 1968. He chaired Northwestern's Department of Mechanical Engineering from 1987 to 1997. He has been a frequent consultant to Argonne and Los Alamos National Laboratories and to a number of industrial firms. He retired from Northwestern in 2010. Lewis's research has focused on computational neutronics, as well as on broader problems dealing with the physics, safety and reliability of nuclear systems. He is most widely recognized for his pioneering work in applying finite element methods to the solution of neutron transport problems and for leading his students in the creation of variational nodal methods. These have been implemented in the widely-used VARIANT code at Argonne National Laboratory and the ERANOS code contained in the European Union nuclear code system. Lewis has taught a wide range of courses in mechanical and nuclear engineering, ranging from freshman seminars to graduate level offerings. He has also taught in a joint program with Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management, and for 15 years organized a week-long industrial seminar; "Safety of Light-Water Cooled Nuclear Reactors." He has made frequent presentations to academic audiences dealing with his research. His appearances on television and radio and as a quoted source to the print media have dealt with current events, such as the Fukushima accident, and he also has given numerous talks to lay groups dealing with broader issues of technology and society. A Fellow of the American Nuclear Society (ANS), and winner of its Mathematics and Computation Distinguished Service and Arthur Holly Compton Awards, Lewis serves on the editorial boards of Nuclear Science and Engineering and Transport Theory and Statistical Physics. He has chaired the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development/Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD/NEA) Experts Group on Three-Dimensional Radiation Transport Benchmarks and currently is a member of the S.
