There are many examples of geographic variation in voice, behavior, habitat preference, altitudinal range, vertical stratum, abunda nce, and nest. Possible vocal convergence or mimicry between sympatric populations of different species is described between the goshawk Accipiter albogularis and the kingfisher Halcyon chloris, between the cuckoo-shrike Coracina [tenuirostris] and other species in its mixed-species foraging flocks, between the white-eyes Zosterops murphyi and Z. rendovae kulambangrae, and between the starlings Aplonis grandis and Mino dumontii. Hybridization is reported between the Bismarck and New Guinea rac es of the cuckoo Eudynamys scolopacea on Long Island (described as a new subspecies), between the whistlers Pachycephala pectoralis and P. melanura, and between the honey-eaters Myzomela tristrami and M. cardinalis. Cyclones bring Australian species , some of which occasionally remain to breed. Over-water dispersal ability varies greatly, from species that can be seen flying over water any day to species that rarely or never cross water. For instance, a channel 12 km long and only 0.15-1 km wid e divides Florida Island into two halves, one of which possesses and the other of which lacks a resident population of the coucal Centropus milo) -- Notes on Hawaiian Snake Eels (Pisces: Ophichthidae), with Comments on Ophichthus bonaparti / John E. McCosker (Abstract: The 22 ophichthid eel species of the Hawaiian Islands (including Johnston and the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands) are reviewed, and a key to their identification is provided. New Hawaiian records of Indo-Pacific species include C allechelys catostoma and Ophichthus bonaparti. Callechelys lutea is reported from Johnston Island. Hawaiian and Johnston Island ophichthid species comprise: Apterichtus flavicaudus, Brachysomophis crocodilinus, B. henshawi, Callechelys catostoma, C. lutea, Cirrhimuraena playfairii, Ichthyapus vulturis, Leiuranus semicinctus, Muraenichthys schultzei, Myrichthys colubrinus, M. magnificus, Ophichthus bonaparti, O. erabo, O. kunaloa, O. polyophthalmus, Phaenomonas cooperae, Phyllophichthus xenodon tus, Schismorhynchus labialis, Schultzidia johnstonensis, Scolecenchelys cookei, S. gymnota, and S. puhioilo. Additional data are provided for the rare deep-water species Ophichthus kunaloa. The following synonymies are proposed: Ophisurus chrysospi los Bleeker, Poecilocephalus markworti Kaup, Ophichthys episcopus Castelnau, and Ophichthys garretti Günther = Ophichthus bonaparti (Kaup); and Ophichthus retifer Fowler = Ophichthus erabo (Jordan & Snyder). The endemism and distribution of Hawaiian and Johnston Island ophichthids (22.7%) are discussed and compared with those of muraenid eels. Vertebral formulas are provided for all species to facilitate the identification of leptocephali.) -- Reproductive Ecology of the Gobiid Fish Eviota aba x at Nobeoka, Japan, with Notes on Geographic Variation / Masanori Taru and Tomoki Sunobe (Abstract: The reproductive behavior and spawning cycle of the gobiid fish Eviota abax were observed in a rocky tide pool at Nobeoka, Miyazaki, Japan. Both se xes maintained nonterritorial, overlapping home ranges. The spawnings took place at the low tide of neap to spring tidal periods. Matings varied in each spawning cycle, but males did not simultaneously mate with multiple females. Males were larger t han females in the spawning pairs. Text in English. 437 pp. Rock art, once considered by most to be merely a 'quaint' representation ot the lite-style and vision of a 'primitive' people, is assuming an ever greater importance in academic debate. Rock art research, believed by some to be the field of the future, may well play a prominent role in the understanding of Southern African history at this time when received colonial perspectives are being rejected. Certainly, its integration with archaeology is producing an increasingly complete picture of changing settlement and ideology over the last two thousand years. New theoretical developments are opening up the field in ways that were undreamed of in the past and, in exploring some of them, this collection of papers offers a way to better understanding of a once neglected art form. The volume brings together the work of a number of scholars who have critically examined what has come to be known as the 'trance hypothesis'. Though they reach consensus about the value of the hypothesis, they raise questions about points of detail and the applicability of the hypothesis to all paintings and engravings. Many of the chapters engage in wider issues that impinge on other disciplines, such as linguistics and folklore studies, demonstrating the relationship between them and rock art. Twenty years after NGOs first emerged as objects of development research, much of the research on non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and development to date has been of a variable quality. While much useful work has been done, the development NGO research field is nonetheless characterised by a combination of an over-identification with NGOs, an excessive emphasis on technical/organisational issues and a lack of theoretical-contextual analysis. The result has been work that often bows to policy rhetoric and uncritically and unhelpfully serves to sustain a set of myths about NGOs and their performance -- of both a positive and a negative kind. This volume seeks to present less well-rehearsed perspectives. Its thirteen chapters are each written by authoritative researchers in the field. The book has two main objectives: to describe and interpret key aspects of NGOs' changing roles in development, and to present new analytical approaches. A key priority is to present work that is rooted in stronger theoretical frameworks than has previously been the case, while still maintaining a relevance to policy and practice. The authors represented here are critical of many of the theories and concepts that frame the discourse on development NGOs and many of them propose alternative analytical approaches. In particular they seek to analytically integrate the international aid system in theoretical schemas that seek to explain NGOs and their roles in development. The overall aim of the book is to move forward the critical research agenda on NGOs and development by challenging its normative biases, using approaches drawn from a range of disciplinary perspectives including historical ethnography, organisational studies, political science, critical theory and anthropology. This is issue #4 of the leftist, socialist and avant-garde cinema periodical that was published irregularly from 1930-1934. There seems to have been only 5 issues ever printed. This issues on focuses Sergei Eisenstein's then ongoing film project "Que Viva Mexico!", which he had been shooting in Mexico, along with his frequent collaborators Grigori Aleksandrov, and Eduard Tisse. Ultimately the film was never completed. Profusely illustrated throughout with striking b/w stills from the film and behind-the-scenes photos of Eisenstein working. Other articles/essay includes analyses and criticism of current cinematic techniques and trends in Hollywood films, and analysis of soviet & socialist cinema. Also included is a short profile on film director Ilya Trauberg. Book block with some light rippling throughout as a result of exposure to water. Wrappers with some light water stains and scratches. Light rubbing to extremities and some chipping to the head and tail of the spine. Interior with some sporadic light water stains, light smudges and/or age toning to pages. Wrappers protected by modern mylar. * Founded by Lewis Jacobs, "Experimental Cinema" magazine ran 5 issues from from February 1930-1934, and is considered among the first publications to view and and write about cinema as art. Every issue dealt at least partially with Soviet Cinema and it appears as though most issues discussed Sergei Eisenstein and his work, to one degree or another. This magazine considered to be the first time the two word "Experimental" and "Cinema" were directly connected and used in print without any space between them. This was quite a groundbreaking publication in the history of avant-garde cinema.…
