Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Third edition. Small 8vo. [3], iv-vi, [1], 8-72 pp. Blue publisher's cloth with decorations in blind on the front board, gold lettering on the front board, a yellow paper label printed in black on the spine. Edited by Thalassoplektos. First published in 1873 under the title Life and Mind: Their Unity and Materiality, and then in 1877 under the title Life and Mind: on the Basis of Materialism. All editions of this work are rare on the market and not widely held in institutions. The Open Court: No. 417, (Vol. IX.-34.) DEVOTED TO THE RELIGION OF SCIENCE CHICAGO, AUGUST 22, 1895. Lewins was an army surgeon and physician, as well as a philosopher. He is most famous for his work on Hylo-Zoism or Hylo-Idealism, a philosophy of mind he developed with his close friend Constance Nadel. Lewins advocated for a secular and materialist view of human consciousness and the mind and argued that humans experience a purely physical world through their consciousness which comes from the brain. A stirring idea for the Victorian age, contradicting the idea of a spiritual or immaterial soul as the basis for human consciousness and experience. An early example of physicalism in the philosophy of mind. The paper label soiled, a contemporary bookplate on the front pastedown.
