From Rosetta Brooks: "The slight chill introduced into the eroticism of American Beauties comes from the presence of the night sky set against an otherwise well-illuminated beach scene in the foreground. Each photo is bisected horizontally into day and night.The dreamy, atmospheric angles of film noir which cloak the American Beauties already hint at a feeling of unease, and the black hole of the sky serves to reinforce this atmosphere. A dense blackness hovers over the oiled, pink flesh of the sun-goddess.The power and strength of Levinthal's images come from the way they explore the American experience through its most potent imaginative realm of imagery: the movies.".
