Frontispiece portrait in each volume, with tissue cover. Transference from tissue cover to frontispiece. Solid text blocks, free of marks or notations. Complete with 42 full page illustrated plates. Light wear to boards, bumped corners of Volume I, general wear to boards. Ownership inscription in Volume I: "Levi P. Morton / February 22, 1910." Levi P. Morton (1824-1920) was the 22nd Vice President of the United States in the Benjamin Harrison administration. After his time as vice president, Morton was elected the 31st Governor of New York. A strong ally of Roscoe Conkling, Morton was offered the vice presidential nomination by James A. Garfield, but declined at Conkling's suggestion. Morton lived to be 96 years old, and was the longest-living vice president in United States history, until being surpassed by John Nance Garner in 1964.

Approx 17 x 11", framed, with state seal vignette at top & blue paper embossed seal at bottom left, printed and (mostly) neatly calligraphed document appointing Commander Jacob Miller as a Delegate to a Convention "to consider the defenses of our Eastern Seaboard" in Tampa in 1897. SIGNED BY LEVI P MORTON AS GOVERNOR, and by his private secretary. Morton was also US Rep, Minister to France, and Vice President under Benjamin Harrison.

Reverdy Johnson, Attorney General under President Zachary Taylor from March 8, 1849 July 20, 1850. Levi P. Morton, American politician, diplomat, and banker who became the 22nd Vice President of the United States (18891893) under President Benjamin Harrison and U.S. Minister to France (18811885) under President James A. Garfield and Chester A. Arthur, where he was popular for his diplomacy. He was present at the laying of the cornerstone of the Statue of Liberty in 1884. William H. H. Miller (18401917), U.S. Attorney General under President Benjamin Harrison (18891893). Ferenc Pulszky (18141897), Hungarian politician, writer, and scholar renowned for his contributions to Hungarian culture and politics in the 19th century. Florence Ellinwood Allen (18841966), was a pioneering American judge and a major figure in U.S. legal history (one of the first women to serve as a judge in the United States). Edward John Phelps (18221900), distinguished American lawyer, diplomat, and educator from Vermont, renowned for his contributions to the legal profession and his service as U.S. Minister to the United Kingdom. Edward Everett (17941865), American politician, educator, diplomat, and orator best remembered for his eloquent speeches and service in multiple high-level positions in U.S. government. Appointed U.S. Secretary of State (18521853) under President Millard Fillmore Columbus Delano (18091896), American lawyer, politician, and public official from Ohio, best known for serving as U.S. Secretary of the Interior under President Ulysses S. Zustand: Very Good+. Unique. Unique. Created using a Benjamin Harrison campaign bandanna and related bunting. That banner features portraits of both Harrison and running mate Levi Morton. The use of "Protection" reminds voters that Harrison promised ?protection? for U.S. industries through high tariffs. An example of this bandanna is documented in the Threads of History [585; private collection]. The image of Morton was based on an engraving by the Atlantic Publishing Company. Considered one of the best late nineteenth century campaign textiles, it includes both textile printing and overprinting. "Campaign bandannas were initially produced beginning in the first quarter of the nineteenth century, and became a particularly popular campaign tool in the time period between 1850 and 1920.? Campaign bandannas were worn, presented in store fronts, waved in parades, flown at political rallies, and hung from buggy whips." Victorious in the election (having lost the popular vote, but won the electoral college vote), he served as the 23rd President of the United States from 1889 to 1893. A unique and extraordinary blend of print history, presidential memorabilia, and folk art.
