In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Very Good. An important set of very rare early Armee Francaise du Levant (AFL) material relating to the occupation and pacification of the new Syrian Mandate. This includes 2 route books (one by the Colonne Debieuvre Sep-Dec 1921), related itineraries, and report from Colonel Bigault de Granrut. AFL's earliest priorities in Syria were to oust the British sponsored King Faisal (achieved in July 1920), and take control of the Euphrates, which involved securing key towns and pacifying tribes which rebels were stirring up. Feisal's coronation in Iraq on 23 August antagonised the French. On 10 September the Ogueidat Bedouin rose up under his apparent provocation, with an attack on Deir-ez-Zor. AFL sent a Column under Colonel Debieuvre, Commander of the 4th Brigade, which arrived in Meskene (3 Oct), Karakol Ammam (5 Oct), Sabhka (9 Oct), Tibni (13 Oct), and Deir-ez-Zor (15 Oct). It took Acham (24 Oct), Bessire (26 Oct), and Rakka (18 Dec) (Fleurian, 2015) - covered in Atlas 2. ATLAS 1: Itineraires No. 65(A) - 68(A): Purple wraps 16x23cm with ms titles and map, 2 folding maps printed to backs of cropped maps of France (apparently this was done to ensure authenticity) + (4)pp mimeo ms route tables (distances, villages, road condition, resources, water, observations) + (2)pp key of signs used. The "Region (Alep - Meskene - Membidj" 1:200,000 47x35cm shows the routes. The other adds to 66(A) de Bab a Deir Hafir 1:50,000 23x38cm. A slip at the front encourages updates be sent to the General Staff. Nd (1921). ATLAS 2: L'Euphrate Itineraire No. 95(A) de Meskene a Abou-Kemal, Colonne Debieuvre Sep-Dec 1921: Purple wraps 21x26cm with silver titles and map. (6)pp mimeo ms text, 15 maps and 6 town plans (mostly folding, on backs of cropped maps of France), 4 annotated artist's views. Wraps good with wear to edges. Contents very good except towards the end where folded sheets have been bound in very tightly, with opening tears. Updates slip, (3)pp route tables and (2)pp key as above. The main map (bound in twice) "Itineraires suivis par la Colonne et Tribus de la Region de l'Euphrate" 43x32cm, 1:1,000,000 shows the entire route, stopping points, dates, sedentary tribes, sub-groups, nomadic tribes, and frontiers. This is broken into 9 Stage Maps @36x24cm, 1:100,000, some with sections. There are 6 town plans: Deir ez Zor 1:10,000 45x31cm; and the rest each 1:5000 for Rakka 36x21cm; Sebka 17x22cm; Bessire 23x21cm; Mayadin 18x25cm; Acharat 20x21cm. Four annotated artist's impressions show the views and terrain the Column encountered, including from defile north of Mudeikat el Diboi; view from Meskene of Karakol d'Abou; outside Bou Maneit showing line of attack with time and date; and near Bessire showing line of attack. There are 2 battle maps where the Column gained victories, @22x30cm ea, for Itise de Besire 26 Oct 1921, 22x30cm; and Accham 24 Oct 1921 showing situation at 11 and 14 hours, 23x22cm. Also 2 regional maps each 1:100,000 @24x36cm for Khaboux; and Bessire, Mayadin, Acharat, distinguishing stone built and tented villages. ITINERAIRES: nd (1921), (4)pp loose sheets 21x31cm mimeo typescript to rectos for de Meskene a Karakol Hammam; de Karakol Hammam a Sabkha; de Sabkha a Deir-ez-Zor; de Deir ez Zor a Abou Kemal. Observations on the latter state that the citadels, minarets, precious villages in the desert sand, give glimpses of the richness of the region. COMPTE RENDU NO. 69/4: (1)pp 21x31cm mimeo typescript brief report by Colonel Bigault de Granrut, Commander of the Euphrates Troop, AFL 2nd Division, General Staff, Deir ez Zor, 18 Nov 1922. This is Louis Paul Gaston de Bigault du Granrut (1872-1953), who went on to become overall AFL Commander (1929-34). He has established that the belief a telephone line exists between Tribni and Rakka is wrong, and confirms the only line along the Euphrates connects Tribni and Deir-ez-Zor. Other lines run between Djerablous- Arab Pounar and Djerablous - Sadjour.
