In den WarenkorbFirst edition of Jane and Lesley Davison's history of four generations of American women and the houses they made into homes. Quarto, original half cloth. Association copy, inscribed by Lesley Davison on the title page, "Julia, A book about homes for someone who is giving us one. With love, Lesley. May, 1994." The recipient, Julia Child was a chef, author, and television personality. She is recognized for having brought French cuisine to the American public with her debut cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, and her subsequent television programs, the most notable of which was The French Chef, which premiered in 1963. Paul and Julia Child had bought their house at 103 Irving Street in Cambridge from the Davison family, and they lived and worked there from 1961. Its kitchen, where Julia filmed her later television series, is now preserved at the Smithsonian. The inscription is addressed to Julia alone and dated May 1994, the month in which her husband Paul Child died. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Susan Shapiro. An exceptional association. To Make a House a Home (1994) is a social history of the American home told through the women of one family across four generations, combining family memoir with research into architecture, household technology, domestic service and the shifting expectations placed on the women who kept house. It grew out of Jane Davison's The Fall of a Doll's House (1980), her study of three generations of American women and the houses they lived in, which her daughter Lesley Davison carried forward by a further generation and expanded into this book. Jane Davison had earlier written, with Bob Vila, the companion volume to This Old House, the public television series launched at WGBH in Boston in 1979 by Russell Morash, the producer who had directed Julia Child's The French Chef at the same station from 1963 and worked with her for some thirty years. The book was warmly received. John Updike praised Jane Davison's "stylistic brio and sociological shrewdness," Louis Auchincloss called it a happy blend of personal memoir and finely documented sociological study, and Joan Didion wrote that she had read the earlier book three times, the last with gratitude for its intelligence, wit and generosity. …
