What unites them is a refusal to abandon their trust in reason, the possibility of meaning, and the need for value judgements. From this basis the ideas of prominent figures, particularly Barthes and Genette, are re-examined; specific essays discuss the application of modern critical techniques to the works of major authors, including Sophocles, Proust, Trollope and Kafka.
