Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Early Edition. Full vellum. 10.5 × 6.5cm, 249pp. Engraved title, Latin text. The title translates as "A Summary of German Affairs, regarding the events from the year 1617 to 1643" and is a chronicle of German history during those years, including the Thirty Years War. Here is an extract and translation…for the entry for 1634: "Hornius Aldringerio & Hispanicis copiis, quæ in ipsa expeditione locis commeatu vacuis de industriâ circumductæ majus detrimentum quod nullo, quam si adverso prælio decertassent, acceperunt, in Bavariam redactis suo arbitratu in Sueviâ hybernametatur, & veris principio Bibraccum ac Memingam urbes recuperat, validam istam, sed ubi nullius pretii miles, illam contra nullâ re munitam, sed veterani inerant…", "Horn [Gustav Horn, Swedish General], after Aldringer and the Spanish troops had been led back into Bavaria - having been intentionally marched through places devoid of provisions during that very expedition, suffering greater loss than if they had fought in a losing battle - laid out winter quarters in Swabia at his own discretion. At the beginning of spring, he recovered the cities of Biberach and Memmingen: the former strong, but where the soldiery was of no value; the latter, by contrast, fortified by nothing, but held by veterans. " This work is now generally attributed to Leonhard Pappus (aka Leonard Pappus von Tratzberg) a German historian, though sometimes attributed to Thomas Carve, an Irish priest and historian who lived in Germany during the war. Condition: Good plus condition for age. The vellum shows the usual age-related discoloration and there appears to be some indecipherable contemporary handwriting to the lower half of the upper board. Previous owner's inscription to ffep, which appears to read "Ex dono dñi D. Henrici / Laus Deo semper / Joes. Connelie". There is some minor worming to the top right corner of the ffep, title and first page of text, with some minor marginal loss to the first few pages. Occasional spotted marking to text, the inner binding secure and remaining in strong readable condition.

Zustand: Good. No place, 1644. 16mo. Engr. title,+ 3-249 pp. Contemporary vellum. From the library of Carl Gustaf Tessin, with his signature and note ?til nya biblioth?on front fly leaf, and from Johan Henrik Schröder? library, with his book plate and from the mansion of Ericsberg. VD17 23:256610T. Warmholtz 4154. The author is…disputed. Leonhard Pappus is often regarded as the author, but sometimes also Johan Adler Salvius or Thomas Carve are mentioned as possible authors. Leonhard Pappus (1607-77), priest and historian, was working at the chapter of Augsburg. The first edition was published in 1643, probably also under the title of ?Compendium belli Germanici?, and it was later edited in several editions under different titles. The large library of Carl Gustaf Tessin (1695-1770), gathered at Åkerö in lake Mälaren, was to a large extant dispersed already during his lifetime through acutions, donations etc, but the main body was sold to the crown prince of Sweden already in 1757. After that sale he created the ?New library?, ?til nya biblioth?, to which this book belonged. It has then passed to the large library of Ericsberg through the profesor in history at the university of Uppsala Johan Henrik Schröder (1791-1857). Hardcover / Hardback.
