With the text in Spanish, this is a biography of Florencio Varela (1808-1848), an Argentine writer, poet, journalist and educator. In 1845 he founded the newspaper "Comercio del Plata" in Montevideo, and became one of the fiercest critics of Governor Rosas. On 20 March 1848 he was assassinated by Andrés Cabrera, who was acting under the orders of Manuel Oribe and Rosas. The book is bound in the original card covers with blue titling on the spine and front cover. The book is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling on the covers. There is a small bit of damage to the top rear spine corner. The contents are tight and clean with some age-browning on the margins of the pages. There is no inscription. PLEASE NOTE: This is a fairly heavy book and extra postage may apply for delivery outside the UK.

Leoncio Gianello (Gualeguay, September 12, 1908 - Santa Fe, June 21, 1993) was an Argentine lawyer and historian, specialized in the history of the province of Santa Fe. He received a doctorate in jurisprudence at the Universidad Nacional del Litoral, in which was also a professor of Modern History since 1950. He was a professor in various secondary level educational institutions. Between 1937 and 1942 he was a provincial deputy in the province of Santa Fe, where he had lived since his youth. Between 1942 and 1943 he was president of the Provincial Council of Education. His beginnings in literature were linked to poetry, to move to historiography in the mid-1940s. After publishing numerous books and contributions in newspapers and magazines, the National Academy of History invited him to be part of the History of The Argentine Nation. He was president of the Center for Hispanic American Studies. E5.
