Material from the psychological, sociological, and psychiatric literature are presented to formulate hypotheses and criteria. The systematic study of 30 psychiatric hospitals permits a fine-grained analysis of the association between hospital characteristics such as size, staffing, special programmes, relative expenditures, and measures of hospital effectiveness. The findings are placed in the context of contemporary theories of organizations and individual behaviour and lead to suggestions for improvement that are new. can be implemented without additional expense and are founded on research. The book has three characteristics. The first is a survey of behavioural science literature and is new or different only in its breadth. The two other characteristics are new. The first is an explicit use of the functional analysis of behaviour. This leads to discussions of the psychosocial formulation of psychiatric disorders, a summary of new behavioural treatment approaches, an essay on the purposes of the psychiatric hospital, and an analysis of employee behaviour which makes use of the same psychological principles as used in the conceptualization of patient behaviour.
