Schon einmal, in den sechziger Jahre, war er mit Einzelausstellungen in Stuttgart und Frankfurt zu sehen gewesen, und auch in wichtigen Gruppenausstellungen der konkreten Kunst wie Formen der Farbe 1966-67 in Amsterdam, Stuttgart und Bern war er vertreten. Seitdem ist er in Deutschland bei einigen Künstlern und Sammlern hochgeschätzt, und man begegnet seinen Gemälden aus den sechziger Jahren hier in verschiedenen Museen. Um die beiden punktuellen Auftritte damals und heute miteinander in Beziehung zu bringen und um den ganzen Künstler bekannt zu machen, der dahinter steht, soll hier relativ weit ausgreifend von seiner Entwicklung und von seinem gesamten ¼uvre die Rede sein, obgleich dieser Katalog eigentlich nur einer kleinen und genau abgegrenzten Werkgruppe gilt. Diese Serie von Collagen insgesamt umfaßt sie zur Zeit etwa vierzig Arbeiten, von denen dreißig ausgestellt sind ist ein Alterswerk im besten Sinne, ein Werk der Reife, in dem sich die lebenslange Erfahrung eines Malers gesammelt hat, der sich seit beinahe fünfzig Jahren mit Grundproblemen von Fläche und Raum beschäftigt hat. - Wikipedia: Leon Polk Smith (* 20.
