Leo Dohmen was with Raoul Ubac and Marcel Lefrancq one of the few representatives of the surrealist photography in Belgium. He was a legendary figure in the post-war Antwerp artistic circle. Because of his tumultuous and flamboyant lifestyle he was his friends gave him the nickname ?the Pirate'. Dohmen was a man of seven crafts: chemist and engineer at Agfa Gevaert and Esso, a bartender from an illegal nightclub, an art dealer and a gallery owner and - especially - photographer. In his surrealist photographs, collages and assemblages he was always looking for a shock effect that he reached through the combination of strange elements. Book.

Executed in 1958, inscribed 1963. A 5 3/8" x 3 5/8" original platinum print photograph of a woman and collage of red tinted lips pasted on top of the subject's lips, with a steel safety pin pierced through the photo. Mounted on green paper with an ink inscription to Dohmen's friend and artistic collaborator, Georges Hugnet. The inscription reads: "Pour mon ami, Georges, ce discours sur l'amour absolu. Leo[.] Anvers lez Trémbaumec le 10 Février 1963." ("For my friend, Georges, a discourse on absolute love. Leo[.] Antwerp lez Trémbaumec February 10, 1963." Photo with some waviness, three spots of old tape residue along the right margin of the inscription card, not touching the text, else near fine. Dohmen was one of only a few surrealist photographers from Belgium. He was born in 1929, at the onset of Surrealism, and his artistic sense and personality was clearly influenced by the art and the culture of the movement. Inspired by Man Ray and George Hugnet, Dohmen became interested in photography at a young age. His first period primarily consisted of straightforward posed studio subjects, but transitioned to a more surrealistic photocollage approach when he opened his own gallery. Dohmen collaborated regularly with fellow Belgian artists Marcel Mariën and Georges Hugnet on film, books and essays. Particularly relevant is the development of Hugnet's satirical, surrealist travel guide that Hugnet and Dohmen had been developing for 22 years before publication, "Huit jours à Trébaumec" (1969), about a fictional city in Birttany (referenced at the end of the inscription).
