Hardback bound in the original yellow cloth with printed titling and decoration to spine and upper board. 24 × 16cm, 286pp. An illustrated and novelised version of Clifford Mills and John Ramsey's 1911 fairy play, Where the Rainbow Ends, a fantasy story which follows the journey of four children, two girls, two boys and a pet lion cub in search of their parents. Along the way they meet dangers including dragons and a witch and are guarded and helped by Saint George. This copy has nine colour plates and smaller black and white drawings by Leo Bates. Condition: This copy is in very good condition for age. There is light bumping to the yellow cloth and some spotted foxing and tanning to the page edges but the contents are in very good condition, with clean pages and all plates are present. A beautifully illustrated edition of Clifford Mills's fantastical children's work, in the very scarce original unclipped dust wrapper. Based upon the 1911 play of the same name, the work was first published in prose form in 1912. The first performance took place at the Savoy Theatre, London, 21 December 1911, and the cast of forty-five children included a twelve-year-old Noel Coward.This prose edition is dated 1924 via the Victoria and Albert Museum, and is beautifully illustrated with nine tipped in colour plated by Leo Bates, alongside further monochrome illustrations.Collated, complete.In the exceptionally scarce original unclipped dust wrapper with pictorial onlay to front wrap. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, excellent, with light shelf wear to spine tail. Front hinge a touch strained, but firmly held. Dust wrapper age toned to back strip, with small losses of paper to back strip head and tail, and chipping to back strip tail. Light edgewear and small closed tears to head of rear wrap.
