Frontispiece, title illustration, 5 black and white plates and 14 text illustrations all by Richard Doyle. Not really a doll story: a wooden doll maker is punished for h…is laziness and his envy of his neighbour, a silversmith, by a black fairy called Malice and her alter ego, an enchanted black doll which grows in size as the doll maker becomes more discontented. Slightly worn at head and tail of spine with 3 mm (1/8") splits, very slight small stain on upper and lower covers, spine slightly darkened, small margin tear repaired on 1 text page. A very good copy. This popular story was first published with these illustrations as an 8vo in 1849 (Osborne I,366), reprinted by Alexander Moring in 1903 with 13 plates but only 6 text illustrations. Finely bound in early twentieth century half green…morocco, spine with five raised bands. Compartments decorated, lettered and ruled in gilt. Green paper on boards. Blue endpapers. Bound by Chatelis, with their gilt stamp on top of front inner board. Previous owners book plate (Philip Currie, 1st Baron Currie) on front paste-down. Top edge gilt. A nicely bound early edition. The work, about a poor doll maker whose workshop is invaded by kind fairies, was originally written by Lemon to entertain Charles Dickens' children and is dedicated to Mary and Kate Dickens. It was published for the 1849 Christmas market and was compared by many reviewers with Dickens Christmas books. The Ladies Companion believed that these illustrations secured Doyle's importance as an illustrator for children. Overall a very good copy of this pretty little book.
