Hardcover issued without dust jacket. Slightly later rebind of full leather wit…h 5 raised bands and leather title label to spine and half of the "Gen de Paris" stamp to front cover. Binding in good condition with some rubbing to all edges and boards and a little chipping to top of back board. Inside, except for the very odd mark, all pages with all edges dyed red, in excellent clean and bright condition with no foxing, waterstains, fingermarks etc. . For added interest the bookplate of Baron Hyacinthi Theodori, dean of the Faculté de médecine de Paris circa 1720s is pasted to front pastedown. Levinus Lemnius was a celebrated Dutch physician, whose medical writings were much translated. He studied under the famous Swiss botanist and bibliographer Konrad Gesner at the University of Louvain and under the famous Flemish anatomist Andreas Vesalius at the University of Padua. This Renaissance treatise on natural philosophy and medicine draws on classical sources, particularly Aristotle with Lemnius being influenced by the "airs, waters, places" doctrine from the Hippocratic Corpus. This important work includes explanations of demonology, somnambulism, and the physical causes of mental illness, the properties and healing virtues of herbs and gemstones, alongside oddities like hermaphrodites. An superb copy of a very scarce early work with an interesting provenance.

In den WarenkorbRare second edition of a popular work on the "complexions" of the human body, a compendium on the preservation of health of the body and the mind. This (occult-)medical work was written by Levinus Lemnius (1505-1568), a physician and theologian from Zierikzee in the Dutch province of Zeeland. On account of his attitude towards m…entally ill people, which he discusses in the present work, "the hygienist of his time" (as he was called) was even considered a forerunner of the Enlightment. His undeniable influence lasted until the late seventeenth century as is proven from testimonies by Dodoens, Cardanus, Paré, Bauhin, Richard Burton, and others.Lemnius first studied theology, and then medicine under Vesalius. He graduated at Padua in 1525 and returned to Zierikzee to practice. He was a pupil and friend of Conrad Gesner and Rembert Dodoens, and was reputed for the elegance and pureness of his Latin. The De habitu et constitutione corporis was first printed in 1561 in Antwerp. The present edition, printed at Erfurt and dedicated to Cornelius Ocker and Petrus Nicolaida, bears a dedication dated 1 January 1561 at Zierikzee. Other 16th-century editions were printed in 1587, 1591, and 1596. Lemnius's work also reached an English audience: a translation was published in London in 1633 under the title The Touchstone of Complexions, a treatise on the physical and mental constitution intended to promote health and self-knowledge.The binding is finely decorated with two distinct panel stamps. The front cover depicts Justitia (75 × 48 mm) above the inscription Iusticie quisquis picturam lumine cernis, signed with the monogram "HB". The back cover shows Lucretia (75 × 47 mm) above the text Casta tulit magnam forme Lucrecia laudem, dated 1570. Both panels are framed within a roll border featuring medallion portraits of classical authors including Cicero, Terence, Virgil, and Ovid.With the printed bookplate of F.R.J. Comes de Chominsky mounted on the front pastedown, and a contemporary ownership inscription ("Sum ex libris Pauli Bevensehe (Bevensee) Victoriae Montani Holsati An(no) (15)96") on the title page. The spine is somewhat discoloured, missing pieces of leather around the edges of the boards, showing the wood underneath, the front joint is weakened, but the structural integrity of the binding is still intact. The front flyleaf is detached, but still present, the lower outer corner of leaf 82 has been torn off, affecting a few letters, some browning throughout. A rare edition of Lemnius's most influential work, The secret miracle of nature. Lemnius (1505 1568) was a Dutch physician and author who studied medicine under Rembert Dodoens, Konrad Gesner and Vesalius. He practised in Zierikzee (Zeeland) from 1527 onward. Devoted to and beloved by his patients, he courageously catered to both their physical and spiritual needs during several outbreaks of the plague. He authored several medical books, the most influential being the present De Miraculis occultis naturae (The secret miracles of nature). First published in 1559 it went through numerous editions and was translated into several vernacular languages. Among the topics discussed are balneology, teratology, psychiatry and precious stones. It is a most heterogeneous collection, heterogeneously piled together, of notions on physiological, physical, medical, religious, and moral topics, with attempts to explain phenomena in nature which subsequent enquiry has shown do not exist at all. The collection is a very curious one, notwithstanding, and furnishes good instances of popular ideas about natural things current three hundred years ago (Ferguson). The main work of Lemnius (1505-1568), Dutch physician and philosopher from Ziericksee in Zeeland, was often published and translated in the 16th and 17th centuries. It is, despite its title, mostly a medical and pharmaceutical compendium, offering advice on hygiene concerning all aspects of life, like living arrangements, food preparation, slaughtering, drinking water, wine, etc. Lemnius' views are not entirely free of superstition, but he still deserves to be regarded as the foremost hygienist of his century. First published in 1559 under the title Occulta naturae miracula, the work occupies an intriguing position between Renaissance natural philosophy, medicine, and moral reflection. Rather than presenting a systematic account of nature…, Lemnius examines phenomena that appeared mysterious or "occult" to his contemporaries, those hidden qualities of nature that seemed to resist immediate explanation. Drawing on classical learning and personal observation, he offers probable reasons and ingenious conjectures for a remarkable variety of subjects.Among the topics discussed are heredity, human reproduction, sleepwalking, epilepsy, dreams, melancholy, and the effects of diet and environment on health. Lemnius also considers the virtues of plants and wine, unusual physiological phenomena, and curious questions about the natural world. Particularly striking is his attempt to explain many conditions traditionally attributed to demons or witchcraft through natural causes such as bodily humours or disturbances of the imagination. In this respect, his work helped shift medical thinking away from supernatural explanations toward physiological ones.The present Italian translation made Lemnius' ideas accessible to a broader readership beyond the learned Latin community, contributing to the dissemination of Renaissance medical and natural-philosophical thought in the vernacular. It quickly gained wide circulation across Europe and was translated into several languages.Leaves 50v-52v contain an annotation, "dele", a Latin term meaning "delete" or "destroy", commonly used in editing as an instruction to remove text.
