Levinus Lemnius or Lemmens (1505-1568) was born at Zirickzee in the province of Zeeland in the Netherlands. At first he studied theology, then medicine under the famous anatomist Vesalius. He graduated at Padua in 1525 and then practised medicine successfully in his native town. He was a friend of Dodoens and Conrad Gesner. This work was his most famous and important, a Book of Secrets with large sections on medical matters and natural history: procreation and birth, medicinal plants, influence of the moon on plant growth, epilepsy, sleepwalkers, sleeping with an open mouth, the benefits of wine drinking, alcoholism, healing power of gemstones. In addition he is very interested in the occult and extraordinary natural phenomena, miraculous happenings, monsters and monstrous births. The final section, the Exhortation, beginning on page 315 deals with religious and moral topics. In den WarenkorbRare second edition of a popular work on the "complexions" of the human body, a compendium on the preservation of health of the body and the mind. This (occult-)medical work was written by Levinus Lemnius (1505-1568), a physician and theologian from Zierikzee in the Dutch province of Zeeland. On account of his attitude towards mentally ill people, which he discusses in the present work, "the hygienist of his time" (as he was called) was even considered a forerunner of the Enlightment. His undeniable influence lasted until the late seventeenth century as is proven from testimonies by Dodoens, Cardanus, Paré, Bauhin, Richard Burton, and others.Lemnius first studied theology, and then medicine under Vesalius. He graduated at Padua in 1525 and returned to Zierikzee to practice. He was a pupil and friend of Conrad Gesner and Rembert Dodoens, and was reputed for the elegance and pureness of his Latin. The De habitu et constitutione corporis was first printed in 1561 in Antwerp. The present edition, printed at Erfurt and dedicated to Cornelius Ocker and Petrus Nicolaida, bears a dedication dated 1 January 1561 at Zierikzee. Other 16th-century editions were printed in 1587, 1591, and 1596. Lemnius's work also reached an English audience: a translation was published in London in 1633 under the title The Touchstone of Complexions, a treatise on the physical and mental constitution intended to promote health and self-knowledge.The binding is finely decorated with two distinct panel stamps. The front cover depicts Justitia (75 × 48 mm) above the inscription Iusticie quisquis picturam lumine cernis, signed with the monogram "HB". The back cover shows Lucretia (75 × 47 mm) above the text Casta tulit magnam forme Lucrecia laudem, dated 1570. Both panels are framed within a roll border featuring medallion portraits of classical authors including Cicero, Terence, Virgil, and Ovid. With the printed bookplate of F.R.J. Comes de Chominsky mounted on the front pastedown, and a contemporary ownership inscription ("Sum ex libris Pauli Bevensehe (Bevensee) Victoriae Montani Holsati An(no) (15)96") on the title page. The spine is somewhat discoloured, missing pieces of leather around the edges of the boards, showing the wood underneath, the front joint is weakened, but the structural integrity of the binding is still intact. The front flyleaf is detached, but still present, the lower outer corner of leaf 82 has been torn off, affecting a few letters, some browning throughout. Otherwise in good condition.l Caillet 6478; Durling 2766; Ferguson II, p. 22-23 (Frankfurt ed. of 1604); Hirsch III, 736; STC German p. 493; USTC 670768; VD 16 L 1103; Waller 5700; Wellcome 3712; cf. Contemporary blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards, sewn on 3 supports with the corresponding raised bands on the spine, the first compartment of the spine has been painted red, a manuscript shelf mark ("E. 188") in red ink in the fourth compartment, the boards are richly blind-tooled with a central panel featuring Justicia (signed "HB") on the front, and Lucrecia (dated 1570) on the back, framed by a decorative border containing small portraits of classical authors, secured with two brass clasps and catches. With a woodcut portrait of the author on the title page, several decorated woodcut initials and tail pieces. Pages: [8], 167, [13] ll.

Signature in ink on title-page and the date "1808", deaccession stamp on back of the title-page, 17th-century annotations on recto of rear endpaper. A rare edition of Lemnius's most influential work, The secret miracle of nature. Lemnius (1505 1568) was a Dutch physician and author who studied medicine under Rembert Dodoens, Konrad Gesner and Vesalius. He practised in Zierikzee (Zeeland) from 1527 onward. Devoted to and beloved by his patients, he courageously catered to both their physical and spiritual needs during several outbreaks of the plague. He authored several medical books, the most influential being the present De Miraculis occultis naturae (The secret miracles of nature). First published in 1559 it went through numerous editions and was translated into several vernacular languages. Among the topics discussed are balneology, teratology, psychiatry and precious stones. It is a most heterogeneous collection, heterogeneously piled together, of notions on physiological, physical, medical, religious, and moral topics, with attempts to explain phenomena in nature which subsequent enquiry has shown do not exist at all. The collection is a very curious one, notwithstanding, and furnishes good instances of popular ideas about natural things current three hundred years ago (Ferguson). The main work of Lemnius (1505-1568), Dutch physician and philosopher from Ziericksee in Zeeland, was often published and translated in the 16th and 17th centuries. It is, despite its title, mostly a medical and pharmaceutical compendium, offering advice on hygiene concerning all aspects of life, like living arrangements, food preparation, slaughtering, drinking water, wine, etc. Lemnius' views are not entirely free of superstition, but he still deserves to be regarded as the foremost hygienist of his century. In den Warenkorb8vo. Enlarged, first Plantin edition of a very popular work of the secrets of nature, considering physiological, physical, medical, religious and moral topics. Guided by the Hippocratic Corpus, Aristotle, natural philosophy, Christianity, and the four humors, the author wrote a complicated treatise that covers reproduction, hygiene, demonology, diet, the use of alcohol, the influence of the stars, natural history, pregnancy, and much more. It was republished numerous times, and versions of it were read well into the 20th century. The work "was often cited by subsequent learned authors, and the numerous editions and translations of it show that is was well suited to the taste of the time" (Thorndike). In the present work, Lemnius took some of the information from ancient Greek, Hebrew, Arabic and Latin sources, giving a haphazard mixture of true facts and fantasy. He clearly intended both to educate and to entertain the reader. Despite his interest in the occult and his astrological beliefs in the influence of the stars and the moon on people, Lemnius always remains pragmatic, concentrating on more practical matters. Examples are the effects of human saliva, whether it is better to sleep with one's mouth open or closed, whether people should drink white wine before red, the use of vinegar in times of plague, the quarrelsome effect of Poitou-wines and the amorous effect of Rhine-wines, and why not to sleep in the moonlight when drunk. With an annotation ("SS:HH:") on the first free flyleaf, and another ("L Albert") on the title page. The edges and corners of the boards are somewhat scuffed, the joints are weakened, but the structural integrity of the binding is still intact. The work is lightly browned throughout. In den WarenkorbFirst edition of a very popular Latin presentation of the secrets of nature, considering physiological, physical, medical, religious and moral topics, by Levinus Lemnius (1505-1568), attempting to explain extraordinary natural phenomena. "Bits of medical and natural lore are thrown together hit-or-miss" in this work, but it was not without importance "since it was often cited by subsequent learned authors, and since the numerous editions and translation of it show that is was well suited to the taste of the time" (Thorndike).
