The lack of local orphanages and temporary shelter…and housing for the Jewish community prompted A. I. Kiek, at the time head of the orphanage in Rotterdam, and at the time personally involved in a case that demonstrated the limits of existing orphanages. Support came from W. van Bosch, director of the Lutheran Orphanage in Rotterdam, J. Salomons, director of the Hague Orphanage, and J. M. Schnitzler, teacher at the orphanage in Rotterdam. A circular was sent out with overwhelming response with some 300 members joining the association. This brochure tells the history of the orphanage of nearly forty year and is illustrated with twenty photogravures depicting the building, including its construction, a group photo of the College of Regents, and portraits of founders and prominent members, a facsimile of the manuscript statement documenting the donation of the building at Stille Rijn No. 4 in Leiden by Wilhelmina Speyer-Rosenburg, and a reproduction of an illustrated diploma for extraordinary members. The brochure provides a list of members passed on, and a page listing the important dates in the history of the Israelite Orphanage. The text provides details about organization, the 15th century building's history, the inauguration, the facilities of the building, a list of members with dates of membership start, death, and with comments on position in the orphanage, an introduction to goals and accomplishments of the orphanage, the management, and extensive section on the children, the preparations for and execution of the new institution on the "Cronesteinkade." Text in Dutch. Wraps with very light wear along edges, slightly more pronounced at tail of spine. Previous owner's Ex-Libris on inside front cover. Several pages at top right foredge lightly creased. Plate following half-title with two photogravures loose but present. Overall in very good+ condition.
