Encuadernación de la época en piel, lomera cuajada de dorados, tejuelo en marroquén con letrería dorada. Primera edición española de este clásico de la literatura militar, compuesto en lengua italiana y traducido al español por Ildefonso Scavino. Desarrolla a lo largo de catorce capítulos los diferentes cargos militares, expniendo una serie de consejos para realizar de manera adecuada cada oficio: soldado, cabo, sargento, alferez, capitán de infantería, sargento mayor, maestre de campo, maestre de campo general, capitán general de caballería, general de artillería, capitán general del ejército, y del príncipe. Es posiblemente el libro que mejor explica el funcionamiento de los tercios españoles en Europa. Asimismo, durante sus explicaciones también trata otra serie de cuestiones de vital importancia en la milicia, tales como, guiar, alojar, combatir, sitiar y defender plazas, con la peculiaridad de que lo hace desde la perspectiva de todas las ramas del ejército ?infantería, caballería, artillería, y personal administrativo-. Los conocimientos que desarrolla son fruto de su experiencia militar y de sus lecturas, por lo que la obra está plagada de ejemplos de las guerras de Flandes e Italia, y de la época romana. Lelio Brancaccio y Poderico, Marqués de Montesilvano (1560-1637) fue un destacado militar y tratadista, comandante de los ejércitos de los Habsburgo españoles en Italia, los Países bajos y Cataluña. Escribió esta obra en 1610, durante un breve tiempo de inactividad bélica, con el título I Carichi militatari, donde repasa las obligaciones, misiones y competencias de todos los empleos de la milicia, desde el simple soldado hasta el maestre de campo general, como hemos visto antes. Dedica el último capítulo a los príncipes, como jefes superiores del ejército. Después de un tiempo como sargento mayor de un regimiento de infantería italiana en la larga guerra contra los turcos, Brancaccio se unió en 1602 al ejército de Flandes como Maestre de Campo de un Tercio que él mismo había creado. Cuando viajaba de Flandes a España acompañando un convoy fue capturado por un barco inglés. Liberado ese mismo año, viajó al año siguiente de regreso a Flandes para aplacar las revueltas que se venían produciendo, ahora como mienbro del Consejo de Guerra en Bruselas. Después de la firma de la tregua entre España y Holanda regresó a Nápoles, su ciudad natal. Hubo de regresar a Flandes en 1621 con el reinicio de la guerra. En 1623, en reconocimiento a sus servicios a la monarquía española, Felipe IV de España le creó Marqués de Montesilvano. De 1627 a 1630 estuvo en España como asesor del Consejo de Guerra de Madrid. Regresó a Italia en 1630 para comandar fuerzas en la Guerra de la Sucesión de Mantua, y cuando esa guerra se resolvió mediante un tratado en 1631, viajó a Flandes por cuarta vez. Dirigió a la guarnición que defendía a Maastricht durante el sitio de 1632. En ese año o el siguiente, Felipe IV lo nombró concejal de estado. En 1633 viajó a través de Lombardía a Barcelona. Dado el mando del ejército de Rosellón (entonces parte de la Corona de Aragón), murió en Perpignan en diciembre de 1637. Piedra angular para el estudio de los tercios de los Habsburgo en su época de mayor esplendor, este libro tuvo una excelente acogida y fue leído con avidez. 210x135mm. (8¼x5¼").

First edition of this treatise on the duties of the various military ranks and on military science in general by the Neapolitan Lelio Brancaccio, Marchese de Montesilvano (c.1560-1637), who served as military administrator in the Netherlands under Ambrogio Spinola. In 14 chapters the author describes the responsibilities of each rank from the common soldier to the general; 2 chapters are devoted to the office of chief of staff, a position he held under the King of Naples; the last chapter discusses the obligations of the prince to keep his army in good order. Three of the fine folding engravings illustrate formations of battle orders, two show fortified camps allocating correct locations for every unit. The manual was much in demand judging by four Italian reprints and a Spanish translation by Scavino (Barcelona, 1639) listed by Cockle. A few neat repairs in blank margins of first 2 leaves, occasional light traces of wear, otherwise a very good, clean copy with a contemporary French manuscript ownership entry, dated 1618, on verso of front flyleaf.
