(line drawings) As the title says. This is the second edition of a book first published in 1928, one of a number of similarly-titled volumes in the "Popular Dog" series ("The Popular Pekingese," "The Popular Cocker Spaniel," you get the idea; nine different titles, including this one, are advertised at the end of the volume). The co-author, Mrs. Baer (of Baltimore), contributed only Chapter VIII, entitled "The Chow Chow in America." This edition has its own introduction, by Alice O. Fullerton, operator (or perhaps just resident) of "The Nea Kennels, Polshot Farm, Elstead, Godalming, Surrey." ("Godalming" sounds something like what I uttered when I read that address for the first time.) I wonder if the publisher had a subsidiary called Unpopular Dogs Publishing Company. Illustrated by Hay Hutchison (illustrator).

The 158 illustrations, some in duotones and color, mounted on grey paper (all illustrations called for present, except, of course,the two images stamped on the publisher's cloth covers); all captioned tissue guards present. The earliest biography of Frederic Leighton (1830-1896), one of the foremost English painter/sculptors of the nineteenth century. Handsomely bound by Scottish binder James Macdonald (signed "Bound by James Macdonald Co. New York City" on the verso of each front flyleaf). Macdonald (1850-1920) learned his craft in Scotland and, after emigrating to New York in 1873, worked with notable binders such as William Matthews. After the renowned Club Bindery closed in 1909, Macdonald acquired their dies and tools, and four of the compartments on each volume here show a decorative gilt tool from that bindery (see Thomas G. Boss, Bound to Be the Best, deluxe edition tool portfolio). With the bookplates of G. F. Holmes. An attractive and fine, well-preserved set, with one tiny chip to the spine head of vol. II.

The first is "To St. George with best regards "F. D." [believed to be for Franklin Delano/FDR]. Then To Mrs. Schumate with best regards, from St. Georg…e. This may be inscribed to Katharine Price Collier St. George, a relative of FDR. Mrs. Schumate is possibly the wife of Robert Shumate. FDR by executive action exempted Mr. Schumate for mandatory retirement. Miss Leighton began her career in the theater, appearing in several Broadway productions in the early 1920's. She went on to collaborate on six plays that were produced on Broadway, including "Mercenary Mary" (1925) and "Spring Again" (1941). The latter, which she wrote with Bertram Bloch, starred Grace George, C. Aubrey Smith and Joseph Buloff. In the 1930's and 40's she wrote for various magazines and for the North American Newspaper Alliance, and served as a naval correspondent in World War II. She was the author or co-author of several books, including "My Boy Franklin," about Franklin D. Roosevelt, written with Gabrielle Forbush, and "Where Away," written with George Sessions Perry, the story of the World War II cruiser Marblehead. Gabrielle Forbush was a secretary with Louis Howe's staff during the presidential campaign of 1932. Thereafter she served Howe as secretary until his death in 1936, when she became Chief, Division of Correspondence of the Treasury Department, a position she held until 1945. She then held several other positions in the Treasury Department until her retirement in 1966. Sara Ann Delano Roosevelt (September 21, 1854 - September 7, 1941) was the second wife of James Roosevelt I (from 1880), the mother of President of the United States Franklin Delano Roosevelt, her only child, and subsequently the mother-in-law of Eleanor Roosevelt. She gave birth to Franklin in 1882, and was a devoted mother to him for the remainder of her life, including home schooling and living close by in adulthood. She had a complex relationship with her daughter-in-law Eleanor, which has led to media portrayals of her as a domineering and fearsome mother-in-law, though these are at odds with other views. She died in 1941, with her son, then the President, at her side. She lived to see Franklin elected President of the United States three times, becoming the first Presidential mother to vote for her son. Sara continued to support her son's career, even standing in as First Lady on several occasions. She was always prepared to say something positive about her son, and remained highly protective of him and his family.

Top right-hand corner of letter reads: "Naval Hospital / Mare Island, Calif. / Ward. T / Nov. 26, 1942." Original folds. Letter in near fine condition with small stain near center of fi…rst sheet. Accompanied by an envelope addressed to Mrs. Seth O. Bailey from Pvt. Leighton W. Bailey while he was stationed at New River, North Carolina, dated "Mar 30 1942." The first paragraph sets the tone for this letter as Private Leighton is quite troubled that his wife has received nothing of his allotment from his payroll. Excerpt from letter, with original spelling and grammar: "Ma how are you? Fine I hope. I just got through writing to Helen and I just got two of your letters & one from Helen. Ma those lousey bastards haven't given her a penny and Ma I feel like a heel writing asking for money, but when I made out my allotment on 'Guadalcanal' they told me she would get paid in full, from last June up until Nov. 1st. thats when it took affect and she hasn't got a damn cent from them. Well someones going to be sorry and I mean it, I'll find out whats the trouble or I'll kill someone." A unique look at a serviceman's frustrations with the military as he tries to assist his loved ones back home. Leighton Winthrop Bailey (1921-1985) grew up in Abington, Massachusetts. His father, Seth O. Bailey, was a veteran of World War I. Shortly after the U.S. entered World War II, Leighton Bailey enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in January 1942. A few months later, he married Helen Holbrook on March 17. During the war, Bailey fought at Guadalcanal, being wounded there twice. This letter was written following his second injury in September 1942 when he was placed on a hospital ship and sent to Mare Island Naval Hospital in November. Bailey was released from military service in August 1943. After returning home, he became a truck driver. Leighton Bailey died June 18, 1985 and is buried in Abington.
