The first issue appeared in 1860, with a selection of articles on diverse subjects and serialisations of new novels.The present volume features ninety-four engravings from drawings on wood which illustrated the magazine to authors such as George du Maurier and W. M. Thackeray. Engraved by the brothers Dalziel, W. J. Linton, and Joseph Swain. Collated, without plates 6 '"Mark," she said "the Men are Here"' from J. E. Millais' Framley Personage;45-48: 'The Escaped Prisoner,' 'Niccolo at Work,' 'The Painted Record,' and 'Coming Home' from F. Leighton's Romola; and 65 '"Mr. Cradell, your hand," said Lupex' from J. E. Millais' The Small House at Allington. With an index to the pictures.The 1865 edition, following the prior edition issued in 1864. An uncommon volume in all editions.This work is disbound with every leaf and plate detached but present, expected with a gutta percha binding. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally generally sound with shelf wear, the spine and boards slightly bumped, head and tail of spine chipped, minor tear to the tail of the rear joint, the front lightly chipped. Minor damp marking to the boards. Internally, disbound with every leaf and plate detached as expected with gutta percha binding. The pages are bright and clean.
