Dated here using Jisc, from copies held at University of Birmingham Libraries, National Library of Scotland, York Minster, and Trinity College Dublin Library.The volumes included here are Marmontel, Goldsmith and Brooke, and Johnson and Others. The two missing volumes are Hawkesworth and Voltaire.The anthology features moral and entertaining tales from a variety of prolific writers. Each volume includes Leigh Hunt"s critical essays introducing the authors and their works.Leigh Hunt (17841859) was an English essayist, poet, and critic known for his wit, liberal politics, and role in the Romantic literary circle. Rebound in half calf with marbled paper boards. Externally, very smart. Slight rubbing to boards. Rubbing to spines resulting in slight loss to calf. Slight discoloration to perimeters. On 7.5 x 14 cm piece of laid paper, laid down on part of a leaf from an album. In fair condition, on aged and spotted paper. The letter reads: 'G Dr. respects to Miss Lusada - begs she will please to accept the enclosed - 3 more Letters will follow - wch. shall be sent. to Miss Lusada - Dr. is gone to dine with Mr. Morgan, who desires his Compts. and informs Miss L. that he will send to her soon the little Mathematician'. The recipient was in fact Abigail Lousada, the bluestocking daughter of Isaac Barrow Lousada [sic] of Devonshire Square. See her obituary in the Gentleman's Magazine, April 1833, where her 'superior talents' are described. She translated the works of the Greek mathematician Diophantus into English, and in 1817 Benjamin Gompertz dedicated his 'Hints on Porisms' to her, declaring: 'the mathematical studies are among the number of your scientific researches'.

With their handsome two-column text blocks and easy-to-read typefaces, the early Victorian Moxon 'Works' editions are highly collectable. Here we have the opportunity to acquire several of them bound in one volume, comprising the works of Richard Sheridan (paginated as one) as well as of Samuel Rogers and Charles Lamb (several published individually). In an amateur calf binding retaining old calf boards. Generally smart, lightly rubbed in boards. Corners of boards slightly bumped, with some rubbing throughout. Internally, very firmly bound. Pages bright and clean notwithstanding some dusting to final leaf. Very Good Indeed. book.
